Anatidaephobia — the fear that somewhere, somehow, a duck is watching you

Hands up if you had duck instead of the traditional turkey for Christmas this year. Well, it's payback time now. The ducks are out to get you. The discussion board consists mostly of the type of fun threads this type of group usually attracts, ranging from 'Ducks WILL take over the world!!!' to 'Duck Jokes' to 'Scariest Species of Duck?' to the classic 'the last person to comment this topic wins!!!' In the gallery you will find over 500 images, some totally irrelevant to the theme, while there are plenty of pictures of real ducks, photoshopped pictures of imaginary ducks and duck jokes, including the Far Side cartoon that inspired the group's creation in the first place. There are also links to a few duck videos.

What's great about this group: it's still the silly season - don't hesitate to join in.

Update (25 April 2024)

ATLANTIS

Atlantis - the lost continent, was it myth or reality? Where was it? When was it? If puzzling over these mysteries intrigue you, you might want to take a closer look at this group. Threads on the discussion board include 'Why we belive in Atlantis?', 'Descriptions of Life in Atlantis', 'Atlantis Myth or Fiction' and 'What about Lemuria or Mu?' Links to online books in the discussions seem to be out-dated, although there are plenty of links to websites that do function on the group wall. There are also posts from members sharing memories of past lives in Atlantis. The gallery includes underwater photographs of the Yonaguni site, off Japan, one alleged location and well as beautiful artist's impressions and also general mystical art.

What's great about this group: read more about an ancient mystery.

Update (25 April 2024)
I could not find this particular group, but there are many groups dedicated to the mythic Atlantis, real places called Atlantis or businesses called Atlantis. Take your pick.

Left-handed People Society

What does Angelina Jolie, Barack Obama, Bart Simpson and David Bowie have in common? The answer is that they are all left-handed. A large part of the purpose of the group seems to be to showcase how many well-known left-handers there have been, and the information section lists over 200 famous and infamous lefthanders - although some of these are questioned by members in the discussion board. Other topics dealt with, include 'Bad Handwriting', “Conveniences of Being Left handed”, “Inconveniences of Being Left handed”, '70% of U.S. presidents were left-handed!', 'What makes a person Left Handed?', 'left handedness in families' and 'What annoys you in a right handed society'. There are also two separate threads asking for **Left-handed People Additions**.

What's great about this group: share in the struggles of left-handed people.

Update (25 April 2024)
While there is still a group with this name here, they have only 7 members and seems to have been long inactive.

I LIT A CANDLE FOR A LOVED ONE.............

Since Christmas is a time for family and loved ones, it is also the time when absences are most acutely felt. While the sadness associated with the death of a husband, wife, parent or child can never be diminished except by time's slow healing, we should always remember that their time with us was a gift to cherish and that by keeping their memory alive, they will never be truly gone. This facebook group has over 200,000 members and a very active wall. On the discussion board, you will find threads such as 'losin your mother', 'loss of a child', 'suicide nothing to play with', 'How does one overcome grief?' and ' If u have a baby that passed away click here'. While the subject of this group might seem morbid, we would not feel the pain of a death, if the departed soul had not touched our hearts in life.

What's great about this group: remember your loved ones here.

Update (25 April 2024)
Most likely, it would be this group, which is now private.

i get distracted cleaning my room because i find awesome things

I had wanted to feature this group on a previous occasion, but one thing withheld me. While the discussion board did feature a few interestic threads, such as 'Things found in your room', 'you made new species in your room' and 'I JUST GOT DESTRACTED COS I FOUND AN AWESOME CD I DIDNT NO I HAD (now im playin it and singing)', some sort of Facebook glitch prevented you from actually taking a closer look at any of the topics. The glitch is still in place, but taking a closer look at the wall, which features plenty of activity, I decided that they deserved a mention anyway. Partly because, well, I've been there, told myself I'm clearing up, only to find myself three hours later sitting amidst a bigger mess than I started out with, happily excavating the treasures of my past. It is comforting to know I'm not alone. Over a 100,000 members share my sentiments and share their experiences too.

What's great about this group: The wall is a treasure trove of, well, tales of treasure found.

Fighting Against Workplace Prejudice for Alternative People

This is serious. Some of my best friends have tattoos, piercings and/or hair a tint or two brighter than nature granted them, but these body modifications do nothing to impede the beauty of their souls or the kindness in their hearts. Unfortunately, it does from time to time earn them strange looks or make them targets of the prejudice of people who are, shall we say, less visually adventurous. Some of the threads on the discussion board include 'A little bit about why I started this group...', 'what about schools?', 'Your stories / experiences of workplace prejudice' and 'Alternative Work Threads'. The gallery includes some images of members' body art.

What's great about this group: support the human rights of alternatives.

On the discussion board, you will find threads such as 'Best Christmas songs ever!', 'Favorite Christmas Tradition?', 'Do you guys have snow on usually christmas?', 'My Xmas List', 'Favorite Christmas movies and shows', 'When do you start your christmas shopping?', 'Favorite Christmas Candy', 'Tree', 'Christmas Film Quotes' and 'Funniest or weirdest christmas moment'.

Bad Translations Make Me Laugh

I share this group with a lot of joy and pleasure, because the description alone - which features translations from around the world - made me laugh and laugh, as I have not laughed all day. Threads on the discussion board include 'Strapless bras made needlessly more complicated', 'Beware of Safety', 'Spanglish', 'Funny Court Quotes' and 'Funny menus' to name a few. The gallery contains over 250 images, ranging from risque product names to nameboards you would not want your kids to see to hilarious notices.

What's great about this group: It shares a lot of fun.

A word of caution: Some translations may be considered downright rude.

NO MONEY REQUIRED - Adin's Experiment in Abundance

We are in the festive season and Chistmas is supposed to be about giving. Sadly, though, for many that translates to the spending of large amounts of money on overpriced commodities that advertisers convince us that our loved ones want? A con? Maybe. So are there alternatives to our capitalist society. One brave South African male has committed a five year period to exploring just that. Adin van Ryneveldt has vowed to live a completely cash-free existence and chronicles his progress and activities through his blog and his Facebook group. He can be persuaded to all sorts of exchanges in order to meet his need, as long as money stays out of the picture. Visit the group regularly to share in the adventure.

What's great about this group: Explore an alternative to the rat race.

I listen to music you've never heard of

Go on, admit it - the majority of us join a Facebook Group because one of our cool friends did, or because we liked the sentiments expressed in the name. Then, once we have publically declared an 'interest', we lose interest and move on to the Next Big Thing without any further involvement. That, however, will get you nowhere with today's featured group. They have a rule. Post four unknown bands you listen to, with links or get kicked out. Threads on the discussion board include 'REQUIREMENT FOR NEW MEMBERS (READ', 'Band list suggestions', 'Does anyone actually try the bands other people post?' and 'Where do you get your music?' In my opinion, this group embodies exactly what the cyberculture should be about, the sharing of obscure information and opportunities and I am seriously pleased to give them my humble badge of approval.

What's great about this group: If you're not afraid to be musically adventurous, this group is for you.

A word of caution: Avoid, if your musical preferences is limited to Top 40 stuff.

Philosophy Is Sexy

Occasionally, in my search for a group to feature within this space, I actually stumble upon a group that makes me thankful for having started this blog which gives me the perfect excuse to continue exploring. Today's group absorbed me for the better part of an hour, and I feel that I have still only scratched the surface. The topics tackled on within this space are so varied, the views so eloquent, yet clear, that you really emerge thoroughly enriched from the experience. A good example of what I am talking about, is a thread entitled 'Gallery of Broken Dolls', which explores, with intimate and unflinching honestly, some of the darker motivations behind helping others. Other threads on the discussion board include 'Free Choice: Is It Always Present?', 'ART', 'FREEDOM ...', 'What Makes One Sexy!', 'Schools of Philosophy', 'Homosexuality, rights and practices', 'Thoughts on Intelligence', 'Legal vs. Moral' and 'Most destructive idea awards!'

What's great about this group: Give your mind a thorough work-out here. You won't regret it.

Primary Teachers - Resources, ideas, stress relief!

In articles floating around the internet, prospective job applicants are often warned to watch what they do, say and join on social media websites, as many would-be employers use data on sites such as Facebook to screen employees. While some groups might bad in a work-related context, others could perhaps boost your credibility with a boss-to-be. Today's featured group would definitely count among the latter and the woman who created it probably deserves a medal or at least a badge. Threads on the discussion board include 'Interactive Advent Calenders', 'mental maths games for year 5 please guys!!!!', 'AUSTRALIA TOPIC!', 'Research Project for Year 4', 'Y4 Stories set in imaginary settings', 'Letters and Sounds' and 'Inspiration for Year 3/4 Class', to name but a few. The gallery showcases plenty of creative examples from the classroom and there are also links to videos.

What's great about this group: It's a brilliant forum for teachers around the world to interact and share ideas.

1,000,000 to join, my dad john mellencamp will quit smoking

This Facebook group, founded by the 14-year old son of rock singer John Mellencamp, has attracted quite a bit of media attention and already has well over 100,000 members. There are plenty of wishes of good luck to the singer and plenty of pledges from members who promise to quit with John or have already quit, but unfortunately, there are those who also express judgements against the singer. Some threads on the discussion board include '1,000,000 people, really John Mellencamp?', 'Time for us fans to help John kick butt ;-) and give back some of the good vibes he's been giving us for decades.', 'The EASYWAY to Quit Smoking' 'john should Quit', 'Two days so far without a cig' and 'For My Buddy JM'. The gallery includes pictures of John Mellencamp.

People Make Lame Jokes About My Last Name

I know I have tackled the name thing before, but this is subtly different. Imagine having the type of surname that draws every joker to make the same wisecrack over and over again. Possibly, hundreds of years ago, your ancestors were not quite aware of comedy potential of the family name, but whether it was oversight or accident, you are doing the suffering now. In the thread 'those of you that should leave this group...', one member outlines just who should not join, while some of the surnames that do get you a welcome can be found in 'Most Unique Names!', 'One of the worst surnames?', 'First Names My Parents Couldn't Give Me (or my sister)', 'The game is: New Jokes for my name!' and 'Worse than mine?'. Also check the wall for more posts about embarrassing surnames.

What's great about this group: Share with others about the lunacy of suggestive surnames.

An Arbitrary Number of People Demanding That Some Sort Of Action Be Taken

The title of this group, I presume, makes fun of the numerous groups on Facebook whose only identity seems tied to a certain number of people, usually a million or a 100,000, being in favor of something or other. Closer inspection, though, reveals that the 150,000 or so members of the group are a fun and creative mix, who keep the group very active and stimulating. In the tradition of 'When I was your age, Pluto was a planet', there is usually several very happening threads at any given time, and the posts are highly interactive, witty and fun. Some topics on the discussion board include ' A war on war!', 'The most disgusting food you have eaten, but had to act like you liked it.', 'what the hell is up with Canada???', 'Gender as a Continuum' and ' I Propose the world surrender to Kuwait', to name but a few. The thread ' The Committee for Inspirational Mixed Metaphors' has a number of true gems in it. Of the images in the gallery - there are over a thousand - some are humorous, some are punchy and some are just plain unusual.

What's great about this group: It's a fun community.

The gallery has 10,000 images of tattoos, ranging from initials, fairies, hearts, skeletons, tribal designs and many more.

The Faery Ring

Do fairies exist? Are they a hidden part of our world or just a flight of fantasy? This group is dedicated to exploring the wonder and magic of fairies, specifically their significance to the world we inhabit. The discussion board is not that active. There are threads such as 'Faerie Healing' and 'What do you find most interesting about faeries?' as well as a link to a downloadable fairy meditation. On the wall, you will find more links, to fairy related resources and fan sites. There are over 50 images in the gallery, mostly of fairy art.

What's great about this group: Fairies appeal to the eternal child in us.

Paranormal

Do you believe in ghosts and other supernatural phenomena? If so, check out this group, which is dedicated to exploring all sorts of paranormal phenomena. Threads on the discussion board include 'demon or spirit???', 'Animal ghosts', 'Experiences', 'Cursed places', 'Do you believe in Aliens?', ' Ancient mysteries' and 'My Son is Starting to Scare Me.' Those looking for opportunities in the field, should glance at 'Paranormal show casting and 'make money from paranormal photos and video'. One topic even covers 'Parablocker - We believe...', sharing information for a device to limit paranormal activity in your environment. Although the gallery features some horror art and other obviously manipulated images, there are also photos that appear to be of genuine ghosts and other energy forms. The wall includes more posts on the supernatural and links to other internet resources.

What's great about this group: Who doesn't like to share real life ghost stories?

A word of caution: Avoid if you are a sceptic or scare easily.

Second Life

What would you do if you could create for yourself, a brandnew existence within a virtual environment? Would this make-believe life mirror your real life exactly or would you play with the wildest possible version of something you would never dare become in the flesh? That is more or less what Second Life is all about and if you are a Second Lifer, looking to share information, or would like to just explore a little before you get involved, then take a closer look at this group. A popular topic on the discussion board is 'What is your SL name?', while a related topic 'SL name and small description' allows you to share a few more details about your avatar. There are plenty requests for information from students doing projects or people conducting surveys. Other threads include 'Why do you play Second Life?', 'Looking for work in SL', 'L$', 'How does your avatar look and why?', 'Is there something in SL that bugs you ?' and 'YOUR SL PARTNER' which includes two posts from Second Lifers who married their SL partners in real life. The gallery showcases various screen shots of member avatars.

Lenore, The Cute Little Dead Girl

She has enormous bulging eyes and scull-shaped slides in her blond hair. The living often meet with some fatal misfortune, when they come into her vicinity. Her best friend, Raggamuffin, looks like a ragdoll, but is really a vampire under a curse. The humor of her stories is very, very back, but that is what makes this creation of Roman Dirge so irresistible. Threads in the discussion board include 'Who is you favourite Lenore character?', 'How many times has Mr.Gosh been killed by Lenore?', 'What's your favorite episode?' and 'favorite lenore quote???' The gallery features over 200 images, which include beautiful Lenore art, Lenore comic pages, Lenore tattoos and other functional art with Lenore on it.

What's great about this group: Lenore IS cute, in a creepy sort of way.

A word of caution: If you don't appreciate dark humor, you probably won't like Lenore very much.

Enchanted Doll

Toys, they most definitely are not, but these dolls are indisputably works of art. The gallery of this group contains some of the most amazing images of the creations of the Russian born porcelain doll artist Marina Bychkova. Ball jointed and anatomically correct, and with features that could include nose-rings, freckles and scarification, to name but a few, the dolls are about as far removed from Barbies as Courtney Love is from a nun . Male and female dolls, artistically tattooed dolls and costumed dolls, are photographed in posed settings, which showcase their incredible possibilities. No threads on the discussion board and not that many wall posts either, but I believe strongly that beauty should be shared and that is why I am sharing this.

What's great about this group: It celebrates the art of a very talented young woman.

A word of caution: If your concept of a doll, is that of plastic, but safe image of a mass-produced Barbie, avoid this group.

You know you've worked in hotels when....

Spare a thought for those who work in the hospitality industry, specifically the hard-working employees of hotels, who work long hours to contribute to what we call our holiday memories. In this group, these workers get the opportunity to share the fun and frustration of their profession. A thread called 'The best complaint EVER!!!!!!!' pretty much says it all, you might find related content in 'The stupid things they say?', 'Stupid things people do in Hotel rooms' and 'Dumbest question ever'. If you are looking for celebrity gossip, check out 'What famous people have you served and were they as you expected to find them or totally different?' and 'most famous person stayed at ur hotel'. Specific hotel groups are dealt with in 'Hilton International', 'Marriott International' and 'Intercontinental/ Holiday Inn/Crowne Plaza/ HI Express/ Staybridge Suites ect...' Other topics of interest include 'Best Guest Names of All Time', 'HAUNTED hotels?' and 'Funniest fcuk ups!!'

What's great about this group: It offers an insider's glimpse of the hospitality industry.

Am I the only alien on this planet?

I like the name of this group. I've felt like that at times. Looking at the discussion board, most attention seems to be focused on spiritual matters. Some of the topics covered include 'alien abduction/past lives', 'enlightenment', 'Multidimensional consciousness', 'world healing', 'spiritual practices', 'meeting soul mates' and 'Spontaneous Human/Paranormal Combustion'. There is more. You can ''Add your inspirational quotes and stuff for everyone here!', share your views on 'What type of music inspires you?', 'how do you interpret spirit messages?', 'do you believe in angels, fairies and magic?', 'How do you feel about psychics and mediums?', 'had any paranormal or just plain freaky experiences?' and 'Common lightbody symptoms occurring as part of the Earth/Human changes'. Links to other resources on the internet can be found in wall posts and also in responses to some of the topics.

What's great about this group: Like I said, I love the name.

The Best Photos of Serbia

How essential is command of language to the enjoyment of beauty? It plays absolutely no role at all, I discovered as I wondered through the stunning images uploaded to this group, which is dedicated to displaying the visual splendor of Serbia. Among the things I saw, were sunsets, raspberry brandy, castles, churches, statues, stained glass windows, snowy landscapes, horse-drawn sleighs, lakes, sunflowers, woodpeckers, swans, railroad tracks, waterfalls, forests, fireworks, bridges chilli ristras and toadstools. There were people too, beautiful people and people with character. Instead of stimulating your intellect with discussion, rest your soul and feast your eyes with beauty. It's a good cure for Monday blues.

What's great about this group: The beautiful and striking images, of course. There are over 3,800 of them.

Acoustic Guitar Players

What musical instrument can be compared to the acoustic guitar? You can play it indoors or outdoors, carry it with you wherever you go, and it can be as good as your own backing group. Whether you are a raw amateur or a virtuoso, you might find something of interest in this group. Topics on the discussion board range from those dealing with equiptment, such as 'how do you look after your guitars?', 'What kind of guitar do you have???', 'The oldest guitar owned by anyone one this board' and 'Strings', to the general subject of technique, which is covered by ' Pick or Fingers?', 'Fingerpicking with the pinky' and 'Which Chord did you or do you still find the hardest to play', to name but a few. For discussing better known guitarists, look at the threads 'whos ur guitar god??', 'best "acoustic" guitarists' and 'Who is the best FEMALE guitarist in the world..?' There are over 600 images in the gallery, many of guitar collections, but also a few humorous ones.

What's great about this group: It's good inspiration for anyone who wants to brush up on their acoustic guitar playing.

Stuff White People Like

I like people who embrace the true meaning of open-mindedness. I especially like people who possess the gift (and it is truly a gift) of poking fun at themselves. Which brings me to this group with their potentially provocative name, because I've found that I like them very much too. The group, which currently has more than 23,000 members, is dedicated to the popular blog written by Christian Lander, who is also its creator. Is the blog racist? Well, that is but one topic tackled on the discussion board. The threads 'How are you guilty?' and 'How do YOU exemplify the stereotype?' lets you assess how closely you conform, whereas 'What should be on the list?' adds more stuff that white people like. It is also clear that the group and the blog have a number of devoted black and Asian fans, as revealed in 'Non-White Yet Read Stuff White People Like?' and 'how many non-white people are in this group?'

What's great about this group: If you have a sense of humor, it will make you smile broadly.

Stephen King

We are more than halfway into NaNoWriMo, and I am not writing a novel. Some authors, of course, need no calendar occasions to get them to write and the subject of this group must serve as one of the most stirling examples. The information section lists his incredibly prolific output. The discussion board is fairly active, ranging from threads dealing with favorites such as 'What book got you hooked?', 'whats your favourite stephen king film?' and 'Scariest Stephen King story you've read?' to threads that discuss specific books such as 'CELL: Poor or Good', 'It vs Misery', 'The Tommyknockers', 'Is Lisey's Story Good?' and 'Best short story in Just After Sunset'. There is plenty of topics dealing with characters and aspects of Stephen King's work in general as well, such as 'Saddest Deaths in a Stephen King Story?', 'best child character?', 'Favorite Character In Any story', 'most annoying character?' and 'Worst real life scare due to a Stephen King book/story'. The gallery includes images of artwork and tattoos derived from Stephen King stories.

What's great about this group: When it comes to horror, Stephen King is the best.

harry potter

There are various facebook groups dedicated to the Harry Potter phenomenon, like for instance 'Harry Potter and the Bad Pickup Lines', '"NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU BITCH!" : Mrs. Weasley Appreciation Group' and 'Fred Weasley -- We Salute You'. That's not even touching on the great many simply called Harry Potter, of which today's featured group seems to be one of the biggies, weighing in at over 52,000 members. Threads on the discussion board include 'What pet do you want from Harry Potter?', 'Who is your Favorite Character and Why?', 'dialougue from the movies', 'You know you're addicted to Harry Potter when...', 'The Greatest Spell Ever?' and 'Favourite Character who Died..' Two particularly popular topics are 'Twilight VS Harry Potter' and 'who said ( dialougue from the movies)'. Draco Malfoy and Albus Dumbeldore both have threads of their own, while 'Mistakes of Harry Potter' tackles continuity errors.

What's great about this group: It's a home base for Harry Potter's many fans.

Largest Native Facebook Group

The cover picture of this group, showing a quartet of Native American braves with the caption 'Homeland Security - Fighting terrorism since 1492' was the first thing that got my attention about this group. 'The Prophecy of the Seven Fires', told in the information section, is equally thought-provoking. There is also a strong anti-spam warning, a very good thing, since many potentially interesting groups can get ruined very quickly by a flood of advertisers. While the group welcomes any native people who can claim First Nation status, the majority of posts seem to focus on the affairs of Native Americans of the USA and Canada. Threads in the discussion board include 'WHERE U FROM, WHAT'S YOUR NATION???', 'Why a mixed race person is still Native American', 'Do you wear moccasins?', 'what makes native people happy?' and 'Christianity and Native American Traditions' to name but a few, as a large variety of topics are touched upon, ranging from news items concerning Native Americans and other internet resources for Native Americans, to political opinions and regional cultural events.

What's great about this group: It provides a great networking resource for promoting the interests of native peoples.

Top 10 reasons to date an ENGINEER

They are the somewhat eccentric thinkers responsible for much of the technology that characterizes our lives. Mostly when they open their mouths to talk about what they do for a living, the rest of us mere mortals tend to wilt in bewildered awe. This group promotes the idea that being an engineer should not necessarily count against a person's ability to attract members of the opposite sex. Threads include 'what is the most common thing among engineers??', 'Are there any female engineers?', 'Which engineering is the best? Why?', 'Which Engineers are the sexiest', 'Toughest engineering subject' and 'Why people hate Engineers'. There is even a thread for jokes. The information section obviously lists the top ten reasons for dating an engineer and in the gallery, you will find over 500 images showing plenty of jokes as well as photographs of works in progress.

What's great about this group: Love an engineer. They probably deserve it.

333

We are fast approaching that time of the year. Christmas? No, not just yet. In three weeks time, on the 29th of November, the sun will rise to the 333rd day of 2009. A day like any other? Not according to the members of this group, no. As they are quick to point out, since 333 is half-way towards 666, the infamous number of the Beast, the number should represent the interests of those who count themselves among the semi-evil. The idea is original and thought-provoking, but to date they have only managed to attract 373 members. According to the discussion board, there was a little excitement when the ' 333rd member of the group...' joined, although, that particular person has yet to be identified. Other topics, and there are not that many, include 'Encounters with 333' and '333 Telepathy'. The group hosts an event, International Day of Semi-Evilness, which is of course celebrated on the 333rd day of any year.

What's great about this group: The idea is original and makes a statement.

Terry Pratchett and Discworld Addicts

Since the publication of 'The Colour of Magic', the first Discworld novel in 1983, the elephant carried flatland of Terry Pratchett's imagination has gained many fans and some 22,000 of them are members of this group on Facebook. There are many fun threads here to explore. In 'Vs...' any discworld character is pitted against anyone else, real or fictional. You can speculate about 'If the Discworld somehow got mixed with other fictional worlds, what would happen?', 'What would you like to see in the next book?' or 'If you were to add a brand new charactor to the disc, who would you base it on and why?' Test your knowledge in 'Trivia game!' or just share your own enjoyment in 'What was the first Discworld book you read?' and 'What's your favorite Discworld quote?' There is even a thread dealing with 'Inconsistencies in the series?'

What's great about this group: Share your enjoyment of this best selling fantasy author's work.

If you love food and get excited at the idea of saving money, then this group is definitely worth investigating. Ranging from offers of free chicken and free sandwiches to free Chai tea and soft drinks, there are plenty of foodie offers look at around the world. Automatic Doors Make Me Feel Like A Jedi

The world of science fiction and the imagination of young boys and girls got a huge boost when the first Star Wars movie opened in 1977. While those kids (and a great many who came after) grew up to battle mortgages and recession layoffs, rather than an evil empire, the dream of being an intergallactic hero still rears its head once in a while. This fun group celebrates the way we sometimes kid ourselves to believe that our lives and our actions have far greater reach than they probably do in reality. On the discussion board, you can 'Create your own Jedi/Sith Character', reveal 'Your Jedi/Sith Name?', share suggestions for staging 'Public lightsaber battles' and speculate on your affiliation in 'You know you've passed over to the dark side when....' If you want to talk about the real Star Wars, look at 'The most pointless character in Star Wars' and 'Star Wars Q n A'. There are also threads that cover 'Other situations that make you feel like a Jedi', 'more inventions that make you feel like a jedi ...' and 'What's the most Jedi-like thing you have done?'

What's great about this group: It's fun to dream only a truly grand scale.

A word of caution: If you don't like SciFi, avoid.

Addicted to quotes

What is it about the human condition and quotes? On the discussion board of this group, you can find threads offering 'Quotes About Women by Women', 'Movie Quotes', 'Birthday Quotes', 'Anti-bullying quotes?', 'hip hop quotables', 'Music Quotes', 'friendship quotes' and 'Inspiring quotes'. One topic poses the question 'If You Could Give Someone Just One Piece Of Advice, What Would You Say? About Life/Confidence/Love/Anything...' There are over 800 images with quotes incorporated in the gallery and many members merely post their quotes on the wall.
If you join the group, they promise to send you a 'Quote of the Day' and they also appeal to members to submit quotes to be featured in this service.

What's great about this group: Once you get started, quotes are irresistable.

Stupid things pet owners say to vets and vet nurses

We are often unaware of the hardships and humor medical professionals endure on a daily basis in the line of work, and although the members of this group care for our furry friends, rather than us, they still deserve our respect, our grattitude and above all our understanding. As some of the posters point out, it is often not so much the pets that annoy, but the behaviour and insensitivity of the owners. Some threads such as 'The thermometer reaction.' and 'Wierd names for neutering' deal with those things pet owners cannot bring themselves to say, while others such as 'Most annoying things to happen in a consultation', 'Know it all's' and 'I Can't Pay You Any Money This Week Because .........' deal with the sort of things vets would love to introduce into conversations, if only their good manners would let them. Other topics include 'Funniest thing that has happened in practice...', 'Worst surgical surprise', 'Christmas disasters' and 'Quirky things that pets do'.

What's great about this group: Learn more about the trials and tribulations of your vet.

A word of caution: You might not want to know some of the grosser, more graphic details of a vet's work.

I'm a Mother of Twins...You Don't Scare Me

While I am not the parent of twins, I can imagine the challenge involved. Several threads deal with disparities 'The Good One and The Bad One! How do you Deal?' and 'Twins born at diffrent weights does the small one catch up?' are examples of this, while 'First grade in seperate class' discusses the pros and cons of splitting twins to allow their personalities to assert themselves separately. 'Fun Tips and Tricks of the Trade' offers a few lifesaver distractions, when things get too hectic. Several threads deal with the terrible twos or the complications of dealing with boy/girl twins, while moms can share and compare in 'How old were you?' and 'smart answers to the "dumb" questions people ask about twins (just for fun)'. There are even a few calls by film companies and casting agents for identical twin babies. If you like seeing double, there are over 3,000 images in this group's gallery.

What's great about this group: It is probably a very necessary resource for mothers of twins.

25 FUN Things To Do In An Elevator

The stoic enforced politeness of elevators can get to you. Especially, if you use them on a daily basis. Whether the 14,000 plus members of this group actually engage in any of the 25 suggested activities in the group's description, is a matter of debate, but merely thinking about them, is guarenteed to lighten your mood the next time you step into one. There isn't much activity on the discussion board, but two topics are worth examining. The thread 'truth or dare [without the dare]' challenges you to answer a question posed by the person above you, elevator
related, of course. 'More?' is where you will find suggestions of other fun things (besides the 25 in the group description) to do in an elevator, and one single post lists a top 40 of those.

What's great about this group: It appeals to your inner brat.

You know you've worked too long in a lab when

Although half the gems in this group are probably wasted on uninformed outsiders like myself, it still makes fascinating reading and, it is sort of a relief that there is a virtual place out there where scientists can let their white coats down and share some fun facts and experiences only fellow scientists can truly appreciate. Threads include 'Best lab smell', 'worst smelling substance', 'Scariest chemical', 'Best colo(u)rs in the lab', 'Scariest Item of Lab Equipment?' and 'worst lab specimen (OR..things that make you go BLARP!)'. When it comes to fellow lab workers, there are discussions on 'What's your pet peeve in the lab?', 'It's easy to spot someone whos new in the lab
because......' and 'What bugs you the most about patients who are having blood drawn?' Wall posts offer possible answers to the question posed in the group name.

What's great about this group: It shows the fun side of science.

Carlos Castaneda

Although he died 1998, the legend and enigma of new Age author Carlos Castaneda endures, sparking much of the discussion on various topics, but perhaps most specifically regarding how his writings should be interpreted. Probably the most burning questions left unanswered, deal with the exact nature and authenticity of Don Juan, which is tackled to some degree in the thread ' did he or did he not existed, carlos castañeda?'. There are references to a documentary in 'A documentary film about Carlos Castaneda: Enigma of a Sorcerer (2004)' and also 'How do we reconcile the contradiction between Castaneda's writings and his life?' Other topics 'Playing with the Spirit', 'the Art of Seeking' and 'Losing Self Importance' deal with self-development, as do many of the wall posts. In the gallery, you will find some highly intriguing but startlingly beautiful images.

What's great about this group: It pays homage to the legacy of Carlos Castaneda.

Hells Angels Supporter Club

Confession time yet again. Somewhere inside me lurks a sixteen year old girl who loved the look and sound of motorcycles and when I stumbled across this group, she got excited enough to pull me in. The group offers a truly fascinating view into the world of bikers in general and Hells Angels in particular. A considerable amount of discussion is for instance devoted to the ethics of whether it's okay to park a Japanese bike next to a Harley. Opinions are shared to the exploits of Jay Dobyns who chronicled his infiltration of a Hells Angels chapter, leading to the evalution by one knowledgable group member of several other books on bikers and Hells Angels. There are some of the expected threads such as 'Favourite kind of Bike', 'ANY ADVISE ON THE BEST WAY TO GET A HAWG OF MY OWN? BUILD OR BUY?' and 'A Biker's Prayer' and also various posts on biker and Hells Angels related news items. Some posts are about as gritty and as real and as hardcore as bikers get. I just hope they won't kill or break anything just because I had the gall to include them within the ranks of Facebooks most interesting groups.

What's great about this group: In my opinion the best facebook groups are those that open up a tiny window into a world not normally glimpsed by outsiders.

A word of caution: Do not try to fake your way in. They don't like posers.

NaNoWriMo

It is said that everyone has at least a book in them. Whether they get to write it, though, is another story, but as November is National Novel Writing Month, enthusiasm is hotting up for this year's stretch. The discussion board of the group is fairly active, with topics ranging from 'What is Your Novel's Title?' and 'How hard is it really to make it to 50,000 words?' to advice on 'Authoring Software' and 'Creation Sheets'. If you are a first-timer to the effort, you might want to check threads such as 'First Timer Reality Check', 'Where is the most inappropriate/unusual place you've NaNoed?' and 'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.... How does your NaNoWriMo start?' to see how past NaNoWriMers have fared. There are plenty of threads about connecting with writers in different areas and even one about a 'National Drunken Writing Night 2009'.

What's great about this group: If you are a creative writer, join in the fun and see if you can meet the challenge of producing a novel in one month.

S.A. HORRORFEST

I have in the past mostly avoided featuring groups that exist to promote certain products, groups, events or services. What interested me mainly, was how groups evolve spontaneously and develop a character and identity all of their own. The fact that many organizations and companies now use Facebook groups to promote their activities cannot be avoided, however and today's group might well serve as a good example of how to use a Facebook group to generate enthusiasm for a relatively niche interest event. The purpose of 'S.A. HORRORFEST' is to create awareness for an annual film festival devoted to classic horror movies which takes place in Cape Town, South Africa. The build-up to the festival, which begins two days before Halloween, includes a daily featurette by the organizers. There are links to interviews with participants, line-ups, details about specific films and sponsored prizes.

What's great about this group: It promotes a niche interest in a lively and informative manner.

Black and White Photography

To share beauty through the eyes of another, is always a rare and special thing. In the art of black and white photography, the dramatic effect of light and shadow is often enhanced, creating startling wonder in seemingly ordinary things. A woman's smile. Trees in a forest. An apple, a diamond ring, a mushroom or the underside of a bridge. If you love to feast your eyes regularly, then do afford yourself the time to be inspired by the 19,000 images in the gallery of this group. There are no discussions, but who needs only words to stimulate the mind? The wall features links to some other photographic resources.

What's great about this group: A wealth of thought-provoking images.

Funny Inspirational Pictures that are in poor taste

Would the image of DaVinci's last supper with Jesus and the rest tucking into McDonalds offend you? That is just one example of the very creative, but very irreverent pictures that you will find in the gallery of this group. There are almost 5,000 posters and you might want to make sure you have the time to explore without missing any deadlines or appointments, because once you get started, gags get better the further you go. Nothing - neither religion nor race nor politics nor high profile media personalities - is sacred. The discussion board included threads such as 'How Offensive Is TOO Offensive?', 'Funny, Inspirational Jokes that are in Poor Taste' and, very importantly, if you are thinking of participating, 'Rules for Posting (New People - Read This)'.

What's great about this group: It offers some great visual humor.

A word of caution: To quote the group description 'IF YOU'RE OFFENDED - LEAVE!
DO NOT ruin it for the rest of us.'

Hell Kittens

The concept of beauty means different things to different people. This group issues a direct challenge to alternative models to portray themselves at their hell kittenish best. Each week members may upload a photograph and the winner is the one whose picture attracts the most votes. Prize is a week as the group's cover girl and a place on the hall of fame, which includes each winning model dating back from . Photographers of the week's winning photograph also get a mention. It's lots of fun and while there aren't too many discussions, there is plenty of activity. Recently, the group has suffered a bit of a hiccup when format changes in Facebook's group formats forced them make a few hasty rearrangements, but they seem to have weathered the upheavels now.

What's great about this group: Enjoy the weeks images and vote for your favorite.

A word of caution: As the concept is to depict a hell kitten, photographs might be deemed disturbing to some.

I was gonna do my housework then I ended up on facebook

Where oh where are the days when housewives had only addictions to daily soaps to worry about? Today, there is so much more to get stuck into. Amongst others, of course, there is Facebook. Allegedly, this is a support group for Facebook junkies, but it seems as if the purpose is not so much curing the addiction, as finding ways to cover up. Threads on the discussion board include 'Kids should be taught in school how to cook', 'Pile of ironing versus facebook', 'how long is the longest on facebook??' and 'Big Butt from sitting on it too much....' The gallery features some cartoons depicting the funny side of Facebooking. One wonders, though, whether the moms in this group actually tell their kids off for being on the Internet too long.

What's great about this group: Share your addiction to Facebook with kindred spirits.

I'm Canadian And DON'T Live In An Igloo Nor Do I Ride Polar Bears To School

Stereotypes. Stereotypes. Where I'm from, we used to joke that ignorant foreigners think we have lions strolling through the main city streets and a diamond mine in the backyard. In my opinion, the statement that makes up the title of this group is considerably more hilarious. On the discussion board you will find threads such as 'Best City', 'What's your favourite Province?', 'Canadian Rock' and 'Canadian Winters'. A lot of the ignorance Canadians have to deal with, seem to generate with their neighbours just south of the border, as captured in topics such as '50 Things American's Should Know About Canada', 'funny stories about canadians going into the states' and 'What's the most outlandish thing you've ever convinced an American...regarding Canada of course'. The 700 plus photos in the gallery include amazing images including some breathtaking ones of ice sculptures.

I'm Tired Of People Fucking Up My Name

One of the most special occurrences in the world is celebrating the birth of a new baby and with the mystery of gender all but eliminated by modern science, only one question remains. How will the parents name this brand new ambassador from the World Beyond this one? Some mommies and daddies exceed themselves in the creation of a unique gem of a name.

Then baby grows up, gets educated and enters the job market. Depending on just how creative the parents have been, baby may end up joining this Facebook group to give vent to a lifetime of fellow human beings not getting their beautiful name. Threads on the discussion board include 'STUPID RESPONSES YOU GET WHEN YOU TELL PEOPLE YOUR NAME', 'Spelling', 'Worst experience/embarrassing moment involving your name' and 'WHY DO THEY ALWAYS ADD A SYLLABLE???' It is sad in a way, that the 100,000 plus members of this group experience such frustration in instructing people in the proper use of their names, especially as some of them do have beautiful and very unique names.

What's great about this group: It vents the frustration experienced by people around the world who have been cursed with a more exotic name or surname.

All Simpsons Fans of the Facebook!

Dysfunctional but hilarious, the Simpsons have been a hugely popular phenomenon since they first appeared on the Tracey Ullman Show. The group description contains links to their myspace page, their twitter updates and also to a site where you can view episodes you missed. On the discussion board, where are threads debating 'What Is Most Stupidest Thing Homer Simpson Has Done', 'The Best Simpsons Quotes!', 'Favorite Celebrity Appearance' and also what is considered 'worst episode ever?' Over 500 images in the gallery depict the Simpsons at their best, and at their worst. There are also links to video clips.

What's great about this group: It celebrates the weirdly wonderful world of the Simpsons.

Is that an accent? Pardon me as I undress ...

Tastes differ, whether in clothing, music or accents. In this Facebook Group, the focus is on accents. There are threads for instance exploring the 'unsexiest accent?' and the 'Sexiest Accent' respectively. According to the thread 'who is ur fave accent having celebrity?' American actor Leonardo di Caprio's performance in the movie 'Blood Diamond' seems to have done quite a bit for the popularity of the South African accent. Otherwise British and Irish actors appear to rule the roost. One group member proposes an ' ACCENT DATING SERVICE' while another suggests an 'Awesome site for accents' which features an atlas of accents. A pearl of wisdom from yet another post states that whatever your own accent is, it will usually sound boring and regular to yourself.

Guide bats for the clumsy

While one of my criteria for selecting groups to feature in my blog choosing groups that show regular and active participation, my attention is occasionally drawn to a group that is so startlingly original, it takes my breath away. It gains smallish membership, but then nothing further happens. This group is an example of what I am referring to. It seems like such a great original idea. I'd love to see it in practice. I'd love to see discussions on possible applications for the idea of guide bats and cartoons in the gallery depicting some of the humorous situations that might arise from this. Perhaps in a year or so, the group may suddenly take off. Perhaps not. Despite it being so tiny, despite it seeing virtually no activity, the group is worth a mention for the sheer originality of what it proposes.

What's great about the group: It's a great example of innovative thought

Update (29 October 2023)
This Facebook group does not exist anymore.

I support interracial relationships!

One of the defining charactertics of Facebook is the way it brings people together, which is why it is wonderful to stumble upon a group dedicated to easing relationships between peoples normally separated by demographical barriers. In the description section, the group posts ground rules for participation, but also hosts a wealth of links to other Facebook Groups that support couples of more specific interracial mixes. The threads on the discussion board make fascinating reading. You can for instance comment on 'Why I Love Black Women' or 'Why I Love White Women'. Other topics of interest tackled include 'Books About Interracial Relationships', '10 Best/Worst Cities For Interracial Relationships', 'different native american tribes mixing', 'YouTube prejudice' and 'What Are The Biggest Lessons You've Learned?' and many more.

What's great about the group: It promotes interracial understanding and tolerance

Poppy Field on Facebook

You may accuse me of having my dates mixed up, but as one thread on this group states, in reality, every day should be Remembrance Day. The group commemorates, as does Poppy Day, which is celebrated on the 11th of November, the end of World War One and remembers the fallen from both World Wars. The famous poem, penned by Major John McCrae is included in the group description and several threads, such as 'Remembrance and Wartime Poetry' and 'Poems that made me stop and think' also focus on war poetry. Individual casualties are named in the wall posts - there are over 800 - or featured in memorial gravesite photographs or black and white snapshots in the gallery. One thread, 'They died between the Armistice and the Cease-Fire...' links to a BBC article which lists American soldier, Henry Gunther, shot in the final minute before the ceasefire, as the last of the fallen.

What's great about this group: Spare a moment to reflect on the human side of history.

♥ LIGHTWORKERS of THE WORLD ♥

The approach of 2012, an important point in the reckoning of the ancient Aztek/Mayan calendar, might be responsible for an escalation in spiritual activity in various corners of the globe. If you are on a path towards universal enlightenment, you will certainly find plenty to explore in this group. Threads on the discussion board range from 'Do you have physical symptoms of Earth Changes?' to 'What is the Crystalline Grid?' to 'Fairies, Orbs & Sprites?' to 'The Power of High Vibrations', to name but a few. Some posts include links to other sources on the Internet. If you are open-minded about the nature of perception, some discussions are truly fascinating. The group contains in its description links to various related facebook groups of a more regional nature. So, whether you are located in Canada, the Phillipines, South Africa, France, or USA, to name some of the locations included, you can use this group as a resource to connect with lightworkers in your area.

What's great about this group: It's a great networking tool for light workers.

My best friend and I have conversations that are impossible to understand

When people click and spend a lot of time in each other's company, they often develop a kind of verbal shorthand that quickly becomes totally incomprehensible to outsiders. If you can relate, and more than 100,000 people do, then join the fun and share the quirks and wisecracks of your special relationship with your best friend. In the thread ''if uve had a moment ly this, post the conversation!!' you can post examples. Other discussions on the board include 'The Best Topic that You and Your Best Friend Share?', Nicknames and Codenames', 'anyone else and their friend telopathic?', 'What's the one word you and your best friend say most often?' and 'Is there a movie that you and your best friend are always quoting?'

What's great about this group: It tries to capture those elements of friendship that are often difficult to relay in mere words.

Petition to revoke the independence of the United States of America

If the creator of this group is to be believed, then Her Royal Highness Elizabeth the Second would like some real estate property returned to her, namely the whole of the United States of America. The statement has caused some outrage amongst inhabitants of the disputed region - many of which are featured gleefully in the groups description. There are over 200,000 messages posted on the group's wall. The discussion board features the usual thread games, but there are a few new twists, such as 'The person above you as involved in a conspiracy theory', 'The person above is the epitome of evil because...' and 'A pet peeve of the person above you'. Obviously, the tender issue of 'American football or Rugby?' is brought up and suggestions are also made concerning the '1st phase of British recolonization in America'.

What's great about this group: It twists history in a direction it will probably never go.

A word of caution: I suppose I better state that Americans venture here at their own risk.

I pretend to text in awkward situations

As far as acceptable social props go, the cell phone definitely rules. If you're alone in a restaurant, waiting for friends or just commited some sort of faux pas, what better way to divert attention from your short-comings, than to pretend to be the brief custodian of some crucial bit of information than someone is dying to receive. Perhaps you can relate enough to join the group. In the basic description, over forty examples of such situations are listed with a request for group members to send in more of their own. While there are not that many threads on the discussion board, 'Ever got caught pretending to text? awkward!!' and 'Not only text messages, but noneexistent phone calls as well!' say it all. There is a thread requesting 'texting buddies ;D', as do a number of wall posts.

What's great about this group: It comes clean about a phenomenon of our times.

Aaaaachoooo! Excuse me I'm just alergic to bullshit.

I have to admit that I had been wondering how long I could continue with this blog without succumbing to the urge to feature a group that utilizes one of those famous four-letter words in its title. The answer is, about one month. The sentiment expressed in the name of this group really made me laugh. For the most part, though, the discussion board focuses on human relations, particularly when they come undone. It is a great place to vent or rant, with threads such as 'What is the most convincing BULLSHIT u ever heard Ladies( Men if u dare)?', 'Tips on how to spot a cheating spouse' and 'Tired of hearing it's the guys fault for everthing.' There are occasional attempts to tackle something different, such as 'Is there a war between Science and Religion?' and 'Church Beliefs'.

What's great about this group: Mostly, its name.

A word of caution: Avoid, if you don't like to see too many of those four-letter words employed.

A group for people who have a slightly unhealthy obsession with their cats.

The presence of pets inspire strong emotions in the lives of some people. Cats, specifically, for all their aloof manner, have been known to hijack the orderliness and sometimes temporarily, the sanity of their long-suffering owners. If the shoe fits, then this Facebook group is tailor-made for you. While friends and family may have heard your stories too many times already, you may share to heart's content in threads like 'Is your cat psychic?', '25 random things about your cat' and 'Do you nickname your cats?' For your feline's more eccentric behaviour, explore 'Water lovin' cats' and 'Weird food your cat shouldn't like, but does.' For the wider dilemmas of cat-ownership, you might also want to peek at 'Cats scratching the couch', 'behavior issue! Need Help!', 'what 'gifts' does your cat bring in from the garden?' or 'boyfriend or cat which would you choose if you had to?' You will probably find many more threads to identify with. There are also
links to over 140 video clips and more than 8,000 images in the gallery.

What's great about this group: If you are a cat lover, you will probably enjoy this group.

Real men have long hair

Adopting a certain lifestyle can have both advantages and disadvantages. As a fan of heavy metal music myself, I love the way tell at a glance that someone you've never met, shares your musical preferences from their hairstyle and what they are wearing. On the down side is the way people sometimes discriminate against others on grounds of appearance. This group makes a definite statement in support of anyone male with hair past their shoulders.

Some threads deal with haircare, such as 'What Shampoo Do You Use?' and 'ever exchanged hair tips with other guys in a metal club?' as well as opinions on hair color and how to get rid of tangles. 'Hair Length' and 'Hottest Artist with long hair....(any genre of music)' focus more on the aesthetics of hair culture, while 'Ever Been Mistaken For a Chick?' 'The Art of Headbanging' and 'What made you grow your hair? Do tell your story' explore the wider view. There are well over 1,500 images in the gallery and girls are welcome, so long as they subscribe to the viewpoint that guys with long hair are the best.

What's great about this group: Stand up and be counted, if you love your hair.

Gordon the Tramp

First of all, the main question must be, is he a tramp or not? According to various members of this group, Gordon the Tramp lives in a house like you and me. He has a website. He also has over 2000 Facebook friends and there are over 13,000 people in his Facebook group, which has seen coverage on Channel 4, the BBC, in the Daily Mail, the Daily Telegraph and the Sun, to name but a few. Members of this group refer to him as a 'tourist attraction' and a 'local treasure' while a thread discussing a suggestion for a bronze statue in Gordon's honour, shows an overwhelmingly positive response. A popular thread on the discussion board discusses 'Personalities Of Bournemouth' (which is Gordon's stomping ground) includes other characters of the area, such as 'Charlie Chaplin', 'Strumming Joe', 'Mad Stuart' and 'Bird Lady', to name but a few. News of Gordon's stroke and recovery also made it onto the discussion board. There are over a 180 images in the gallery and links to video clips featuring Gordon himself. So what is Gordon's charm? Why did this man's somewhat eccentric take on life win him such a devoted fan base?

What's great about this group: It celebrates the local flavor of a region, as personified by one of its better known inhabitants.

Update (25 October 2023)
The group does not seem to exist anymore, and it's difficult to tell whether Gordon himself is still alive. If so, he would be in his nineties by now. He has his own page on Wikipedia, which you can visit here

If you have ever had to explain to a fellow traveller where you are from and been faced with a blank look, you will love this group. While various groups on Facebook celebrate the idiosyncrasies of people who live in a specific region, or poke fun at stereotypes associated with specific nationalities, the true aim here seems to be the sharing of knowledge. Threads on the discussion board include 'When you hear " Saudi Arabia ", what comes to your mind ?', 'OMG Where's Located Colombia?', 'When someone mentions SINGAPORE, what comes to your mind?' and 'Dumbest thing anyone has ever asked you (2)'. Unfortunately, there is also a bit too much spam represented in the discussions. What makes this group well worth a visit, though, are the beautiful and truly unusual images in the gallery section uploaded from various corners of the globe.

What's great about this group: Be proud of the country you hail from, however obscure it may seem.

Physics doesn't exist, its all gnomes

This is fun. I'm telling you. Take any theory of science you have had to learn through painstaking effort. String theory. Relativity theory. Chaos Theory. What about how things actually work? Digital cameras, for instance, or fireworks. And while we are at it, let us look at psychology and global warming. While we are at it, why stick to what is, when we could move on to what could be? Dark matter and time travel might well be possible in the near future. All we need to do, is to bring in the gnomes. Discussion on this group is centred mainly around what gnomes do for us, have done for us and could do for us. A sampling of threads include 'Gnomes in my bloodstream', 'black hole gnomonics', 'www.gnomopedia.comli.com', 'Eco-Gnome', 'Alcohol gnomes (hic) and their connection to food. All booze gnomes are the same' and The Universe is a Hologram...produced by G(n)omes?' If you think science is way too serious and stuffy, join the group's 66,000 plus members in the fun.

What's great about the group: It represents a fun alternative view of the world as we know it.

You run up the stairs because you think something is gunna grab you!

Have you ever checked under the stairs, the bed or in the closet to see whether Chuckie, Freddy or Jason might be lurking in there to get you? Have you ever slept with the light on? Have you ever dreaded going to the bathroom in the middle of the night? If you said yes to any or all of the above (and who hasn't), you will be pleased to know that there is a Facebook group out there that has your number. Share your scary movie memories, your scary real life experiences and whatever silly superstition you might have clung to, once the lights went out. Threads on the discussion board - there are over 500 of them - include 'Whats the lamest thing that still scares you??', 'how do you imagine the monster below your bed physically is?', 'pool fears', 'Drain phobia' and, naturally 'Are you afraid of the dark?'

What's great about this group: Share your irrational fears with others.

A word of caution: Avoid, if you scare easily...

Read Banned Books

What do the books 'To kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee, 'Beloved' by Toni Morrison, 'Catch-22' by Joseph Heller, 'Gone with the Wind' by Margaret Mitchell and '1984' by George Orwell have in common? All of the above appear on a list by American Librarian's Association's list of books that have at one time been challenged or outright banned. Other books that have been considered suspect somewhere at some time include 'Charlotte's Web', 'Winnie the Pooh', and the 'Harry Potter' series. If you do not want authorities to dictate your reading for you, then I strongly urge you to show your support to the group 'Read Banned Books'. On the discussion board, you can comment on threads such as ' Top 100 Challenged Books', 'Fahrenheit 451 - Which book would you memorize?' or 'Harry Potter Ban'. Most importantly, you can show your support for Banned Books Week, which ends on Saturday 3 October.

What's great about this group: It mobilizes members to come to the defense of some outstanding books that are considered dangerous because they challenge our perceptions of the society we live in.

Update (25 October 2023)
There are several Facebook groups to highlight the importance of reading banned books, but I'm not sure whether this group survived.

Post secret

This is the Facebook fan group for an initiative that began on Blogger and has since established a presence on twitter, myspace, youtube and of course Facebook. The initial challenge was to send in a postcard that displays a personal secret as a work of art, and various spinoffs seem to have gained a life of their own. The thead 'Text Confessions' invites you to post your details in order to send and receive secrets via the myspace page. 'I need to get this out' contains posts of confessions and also, touchingly, support. As one poster states, what 'postsecret' is truly about, is helping those who need it. In the gallery, postcards from the original blog are displayed.

Interestingly, the group's discussion board also contains some criticism of postsecret founder Frank Warren, for the fact that archive material is only available through his books. There is even an urban legend regarding the books, that some fans of the initiative have taken to slipping postcards with their own secrets into the books in bookshops, meaning that each buyer gets a unique surprise secret included. True or false? Hard to tell, but it is very intriguing.

What's great about the group: It shows humanity in all its heartbreakingly flawed beauty.

A word of caution: Give it a miss if your first instinct is to judge.

Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

Generally, the media assaults us with gravity. Deaths. Politics. Power struggles. Sometimes, we need to let our hair down, and stop taking ourselves so seriously. If you've had enough of all the isms and dogmas that haunt our lives, this group opens the window on a little irreverence. There are over 900 discussions, ranging from 'Pastafarianism as an Official Religion' and 'The Holy Noodle' to 'Feel my "wrath", but enjoy my perfect meat ball...' A thread entitled ' The Eight "I'd Really Rather You Didn'ts' preaches a message of tolerance and as membership numbers touches on six digits, one thread speculates as to 'who will be the 100,000th member of this group', a riddle that remains unsolved thus far.

What's good about this group: A great place to visit, if you are in the mood for some irreverent fun.

A word of caution: You might get offended at some of the quasi-religious statements posted by members.

I'm from a small town you've never heard of

It's a question that comes up sooner or later when you get to know people. Where are you from? Great, obviously, if you can proudly mention a well known city with the world famous landmarks that appear on post cards and in glossy picture books. It becomes a little more complicated if you have to spell the name of your hometown three times, then explain where it is, and reluctantly have to admit that its main claim to fame is a talking cow. If you can relate, you might laugh at the 30 statements on the main page and you can share your experiences in threads such as 'So what is your small-town famous for???' or 'You might be from a REALLY small town if ...'

What's good about the group: No town is too small to get a mention in this Facebook group.

Knitting

In recent years, knitting has seen a huge revival of interest, with new innovations emerging and public knitting events being organized in various cities. This group, with over 4000 members, is an excellent forum to share your passion for stitchcraft with kindred spirits, ask for advice or find out who does what in your area. Threads on the discussion board include 'Best Brand of circular needles', 'Knitting Magazines?', 'Current Projects' - with well over a hundred posts to date - and 'Knitting Newbie - Need Help'. You can also check out the gallery to admire photographs of completed knitting by members or post your own achievements.

What's good about the group: It offers knitters worldwide a great opportunity to network.

A word of caution: Give it a miss, if you are not into handcraft.

Furry Fandom

The furry subculture, for those unfamiliar with it, is basically a playing ground for those individuals who identify so deeply with the animal kingdom that they employ costumes and other forms of artistic expression to indulge in role-play that usually involves the creation of a specific animal persona. If you would like to know more, or get involved, then this group is a great starting resource and it features various links on the main page to more detailed forums. On the discussion board, you will find threads such as 'female furries?', 'What is your Fursona?' and 'Who is your favorite Disney Furcharacter?' Also worth exploring, are threads related to events and requests to hook up with furries in specific areas.

What's good about the group: If you are a furry, you will feel right at home.

A word of caution: If the furry lifestyle is a major turnoff, then give this group a miss.

Addicted to World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft is probably the most popular role playing game since computers first revolutionized the RPG scene. There are millions of players worldwide and each new expansion to the game causes great excitement. If you are addicted to World of Warcraft, then this is an excellent forum for sharing your experiences in threads like 'Your funniest moment while playing' and 'you know that you are addicted to WoW when...' For more serious debate, you can share your thoughts on 'Which side is better Horde or Alliance?' or 'The Future of WoW - Theories, Rumors, etc'. A thread entitled 'how many girls out there play. Post and give us your stats' has drawn 600 posts to date.

What's good about the group: If you're new to World of Warcraft or exploring new territory, so to speak, this is a great place to solicit advice from more experienced players.

iTS A TWiLiGHT THiNG YOU WOULDNT UNDERSTAND

So far, I have managed to avoid the feeding frenzy for vampires that the popularity of the Twilight books and subsequent movies have generated. But if you've caught a serious bout of Edward and Bella fever, then you will be able to identify very strongly with the sentiments expressed in this group. The front page contains a detailed cast list, release dates and also various links to websites, videos and fan pages related to the Twilight universe. Apart from threads, such as 'The Twilight Fictional Character Awards' and 'What would the person above be? Vampire, Werewolf or Mortal?', the discussion board also showcases a wealth of Twilight fanfiction stories in progress.

What's good about the group: It's a great place to share your thoughts, if you are a fan.

A word of caution: Avoid, if you can't relate to this latest vampire craze.

The lying down game

One interesting side effect of the internet in general and social networks in particular, is the way it has revolutionized the organization of events. Sometimes these tools birth phenomena that seem epic in their very pointlessness. Allow me to introduce you to the relatively harmless fun to be had in playing the lying down game, an Facebook inspired activity that has enjoyed media exposure on the BBC and in newspapers across the globe. It's very simple. Have yourself photographed lying down in a public place. This group's gallery has over 15,000 photographs in its gallery already, of members who did just that. Post news of your latest pictures on the wall. Or use the discussion board to network with other members in your area.

What's great about this group: It's harmless fun in a uniquely Facebook way.

A word of caution: Participation will involve sacrificing a little of your dignity. The group carries a disclaimer that members play the game at their own risk

Update (12 April 2024)
There are at least four groups that go by this name. The largest (and possibly the original) group seems to be this one, which has 1.1k, members.

Nursing makes me drink

You might not want to know of the existence of this group. If your mental image of a nurse is that of an angelic care-giver in a spotlessly clean uniform, you might find yourself firmly shaken out of your illusions with the very first peek at the discussion board. You might find yourself a little unnerved to learn that over 400 people have already commented on a debate entitled 'Which branch of nursing produces the best drinkers?' and you would definitely not want to know about a thread called 'Have you nearly killed a patient?' On the other hand, it might not be such a bad thing to be occasionally reminded that nurses are as human as the rest of us. The first post in a thread entitled 'This was written by a husband of a nurse (I just had to share it!!, enjoy)' offers a particularly valid reality check.

What's good about this group: Even nurses need to let down their hair once in a while.

A word of caution: You might not want to know more about the secret lives of nurses.

Update (12 April 2024)

50 Things to Do While At a McDonald's Drive-Through

Is your inner brat alive and kicking? Then you should thoroughly enjoy this one.

When ordering fast food, most of us generally attempt to behave politely, gently try to dodge the upsale attempts and remind ourselves that the person at the other end of the counter is an underpaid human being who should be treated with respect.

Deep down, of course, an inner dialogue of sitcom wisecracks sizzle for air. This group makes a great platform for all that pent-up, frustrated comedy genius. The recent news section boasts 50 suggestions for bad behaviour, plus ten more submitted by members. On the discussion board, there is more in two threads entitled ' IDEA COMPETITION!' and 'Stuff that can be added to the list!'. If you're in the mood for a bit of silly story-telling, you can also investigate the 'Mcdonald Story Game'.

What's great about this group: It pokes fun at franchised fast food service, providing a relatively harmless outlet for frustrations related to that industry.

A word of caution: You need to be in touch with your inner child to fully appreciate this group.

Update (12 April 2024)

The Chuck Norris Facts

Some of my friends hate Chuck Norris. I would not particularly call myself one of his fans. But the Chuck Norris facts that make their way into wall posts, trick photos and joke emails can cause anyone to involuntarily laugh out loud regardless. They are just too outragious. The 'basic info' section of this group contains no less than 510 'facts' and a thread entitled 'we need new CHUCK NORRIS FACT!!!!!!!!!!!!! place new unheard of facts' has seen over 1000 posts, although some new facts seem to be little more than a rearrangement of an older fact. There is even a link to an application that generates Chuck Norris facts.

What's good about the group: It is relentlessly funny.

A word of caution: Avoid if the mere mention of Chuck Norris' name causes you to break out in a rash. Also, some of the 'facts' are quite crude.

Update (29 October 2023)
As expected, there are numerous Facebook groups and pages dedicated to the legend of Chuck Norris. including CHUCK NORRIS FACTS, Chuck Norris Jokes & Facts, Chuck Norris Memes and Jokes, Chuck Norris Jokes (a private group) and Chuck Norris simply the Legend - the Fan Group.

Awkward moments define my life

We've all been there - that life-defining moment when you find yourself in the wrong place, at the wrong time and with the wrongest words imaginable having just escaped your lips. Once the embarrassment clears and you've made the necessary apologies, the incident(s) can make brilliantly hilarious stories, as this Facebook group, with nearly 250,000 members, clearly illustrates. You can share your own awkward moments in threads such as 'Awkward injuries', 'Talking in your sleep', 'what about bathrooms, and the awkward mom moments' and 'uhm... OOPS!!!'

What's good about this group: It is fun and funny. Plain and simply.

A word of caution: Your friends might read your posts and wish you (or they) didn't.

Update (29 October 2023)
There is still a group called Awkward Moments Define My Life. Go here to visit or join.

Drifting

To some people, a car is nothing more than what gets you from A to B. To others, the challenge of coaxing exceptional performance from a vehicle designed for ordinary road use, can be raised to a form of art. The sport of drifting, which originated in Japan, involves a technique of controlled oversteering where the rear slip angle exceeds the front slip angle. If you are interested in learning more about drifting, this facebook group is worth a glance.

Although there isn't that much activity on the discussion board, more than 700 photos are uploaded to the group, and various wall posts feature links to videos. Some threads, such as 'Top 3 Mistakes Beginner Drifters Make' and 'Best Drifting Car of All time?' might be worth checking out anyway.

What is good about the group: It connects the enthusiasts of a relatively obscure sport and enables them to share experiences and advice.

Update (29 October 2023)
While I couldn't find a group called Drifting, there are other groups dedicated to drifting such as Drift is Life and All Things Drifting.

Steampunk

The genre now referred to as steampunk may have existed long before its label was termed. Per definition, steampunk includes any fantasy or science fiction setting where steampower still plays a major role, but many fans of steampunk name long-dead authors such as Jules Verne and H.G. Wells among their favorites. The group features such fun threads as 'Your Steampunk Alter ego's' and 'Steampunk Slang', but also offers opportunities for enthusiasts to hook up with steampunkers and steampunk events in their area.

What's good about this group: It's a good place to visit if you've caught the steampunk bug or would like to find out what the fuss is all about.

Update (29 October 2023)
This Facebook group still exists and shares awesome content - mainly gadgets and gear. Go here to visit or join.

Reading is Sexy

If friends and family do not quite understand why you spend most of your time with your face buried between the covers of a book, rest assured, the 79,000 plus members of this group know exactly how you feel. There are well over a thousand threads on the groups very active discussion board, which ranges from 'Book you're reading right now' and 'Favorite Book No One Knows About' to 'What character have you been dismayed to relate to?'.

What's good about the group: If you love books and reading, you will feel right at home.

A word of caution: If you're not that much of a reader, you might find yourself a little out of your depth.

(Update: 29 October 2023)
There is still a Facebook group called Reading is Sexy. Go here to visit or join.

Aaron Sorkin and the Facebook Movie

About a year ago, it was announced that screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, creator of (amongst others) 'West Wing' was planning a motion picture script on the subject of Facebook. He founded this group as part of his research initiative for the project and has been using it as a forum to chat to members ever since. A thread Sorkin started entitled 'Questions for me' has seen more than 12,900 posts to date. Most of the discussion, though, focuses on Sorkin's career, rather than suggestions for the Facebook movie.

More recent news on the movie is the appointment of David Fincher as director.

What's good about this group: If, for any reason, you have something to say to Aaron Sorkin, here's your opportunity to do it.

Update (29 October 2023)
This Facebook group no longer exists, which is hardly surprising, since the movie in question (The Social Network) came out in 2010.

The Hardest Part of a Zombie Apocalypse Will be Pretending I'm Not Excited

Zombies appear to be making some sort of comeback in popular culture. There are various new zombie zines and movies out or eminent. If this group, over 72,000 members strong, is anything to go by, a ready market exists to devour these. The discussion board is quite active, featuring threads such as 'mission essential equipment list', 'The zombie survival guide' and 'What would you say to a zombie before you put a bullet in his head?'. In debate about who group members would most like to see fed to the zombies, independent film maker Michael Moore and actor Tom Cruise are popular choices.

What's good about this group: It's really great to fantisize in gory detail about something that will most probably never happen. A must for horror fans.

A word of caution: If you hate B-movies, you probably won't enjoy the group either.

Update (29 October 2023)
There is a Facebook page with the same name, which has 1,100 followers and can be found here

A Glass of Wine Solves Everything

I have to confess that I don't drink wine. It gives me a headache, especially red wine. Having gotten that off my chest, this group really manages to bring home to me how much I am missing out on. With over 170,000 members and more than 700 threads on the discussion board, it is a fairly lively group. One particularly active thread, 'What are you drinking right now?' boasts 600 plus posts already, and if you're on a budget, you might want to look at the 'Cheap but good' recommendations. If you're feeling adventurous, you could cast your eye to 'lesser known varietals'. In an older thread, 'Which country makes the best wines and why?' the merits of wines from France, Italy, Australia, South Africa and many more are debated.

What's good about this group: There is a lot of information-sharing, many recommendations and the enthusiasm is truly contagious.

I LOVE RANDOM INTERESTING FACTS

Trivia can be irresistible fun and just about everybody knows something worth sharing.

For example, would you like to know why Donald Duck is banned in Finland? Or in what musical key a toilet flushes? Or who first coined the word 'nerd'? Or what barophobia is? Or which world leader was born in the ladies room or which Hollywood actress had six toes on her left foot? Or which famous painter invented scissors?

What is good about this group: It is quite literally a mine of random bits of information and can keep anyone occupied for ages.

A word of caution: Some random facts are a little on the raunchy side. Avoid if you are easily offended.

Update (29 October 2023)
No Facebook group remaining with this name, but there are numerous new Facebook groups dedicated to random, interesting fun facts.

nutella is SEX in a jar

We all have guilty pleasures. Some are more embarrassing to admit than others. If you're a chocoholic given to secretly spooning out whole jars of Ferraro Rocher's Nutella in one sitting, rest assured - you are not alone. In fact there are more than 4,500 Facebook users willing to publicly declare that they share your addiction. The 356 wall posts (at last count) are particularly telling.

What's good about this group: Share your own outrageous claims about the popular chocolate spread. Confess your binges. Join in the fun.

A word of caution: Avoid at all costs if you are trying to diet or fast.

Update (28 October 2023)

Who stole my reply button?

Once in a while Facebook makes a few adjustments. Something gets added. Something else gets taken away. Inevitably some Facebook users are unhappy because their favorite button or feature is no longer available. In this case, the missing ingredient is the REPLY button that group members use to indicate that their response targets a specific post made by another member. As a result over 3000 Facebook users have already joined this group to indicate their displeasure.

What's good about the group: Here's your chance show the big bosses at Facebook how you feel. Occasionally, they even pay attention. Notably a group founded to remove the 'is' from status lines can be taken as an example of this.

Update (28 October 2023)
This Facebook group does not seem to exist anymore.

When I was your age, Pluto was a planet.

This was the Facebook group that first illustrated to me how much fun you can have in a large and very active group. Founded as a tongue-in-cheek statement regarding Pluto's demotion from planetary status, the group now has well over a million and a half members. It features a variety of fun threads such as 'Last one to post here wins!!!! (for pluto)', an irresistible, but impossible challenge, 'The Wrong Answer Game', 'Corrupt-a-wish' and 'Describe the person above you in one word'.

Who will love it: If you're home alone, depressed or just plain bored, you can enjoy hours of light-hearted silliness with complete strangers. Some may even enjoy your company enough to befriend you.

A word of caution: This group can be highly addictive.

Update (29 October 2023)
Although the group is still alive after all these years, it is not very active these days. Which is such a pity. Back in the day, this Facebook group could provide hours of random fun. Go here to visit or join.

Introduction - what is facebook group of the day?

I have a confession to make. Soon after joining Facebook in 2007, I pretty much fell in love with the idea of its groups features. Perhaps it was because my wonderfully eccentric and inventive friends were creating or joining something new on a daily basis. It seemed to me like the virtual equivalent of an extended club crawl and a visit to the mall all rolled into one.

The idea of this blog is to celebrate the ongoing creation of these little (and not so little) roadside attractions along the superhighway of the social media website we know and love as Facebook.
