The World Wide Web of Spiders

Since we have entered the month of Halloween - traditionally associated with fear, scary stories and horror festivals, it would not be inappropriate to visit a phobia so common most people have no trouble whatsoever remembering its learned name. Arachnophobia is the fear of spiders. But while spiders are predators with complex social rituals, (and a select few pack an impressive load of toxins within their venom sacs) most spiders are harmless to humans - often feeding on true pests such as roaches and mosquitoes. On the World Wide Web of Spiders, you will encounter arachnids from Greece, Egypt, the Philippines, France, Australia, the Americas and many more. Rather than spider pet hobbyists (yes, there are Facebook groups for those also), this community comprises casual to serious observers. Apart from ID requests, there are plenty of intimate close-ups of rarities such as the gorgeously patterned velvet spider, the orb weaver, wolf spiders and that common favorite, the winningly photogenic and ever quirky jumping spider.

Live Cams of Africam and WildEarth

Have you ever seen an orphaned rhino cub dreaming in his boma shelter? A party of young lions at the watering hole with their mother. Elephants contemplating the splendor of an African sunset. A large gathering of zebra. Wildebeest enjoying a good roll in the mud. A python snatching a meal. A family of baboons. Rare cheetah cubs at Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre. A graceful genet. A caracal whose lightning-fast reflexes leaves only a blurred smear of light. Eagle fledglings enjoying parental care. An ostrich male patrolling his beat. Terrapin taking to the water. Various interspecies encounters. Almost a decade before Netflix first launched, Africam began its wildlife livestreams, first from the Sabie Sands game reserve, then expanding to over thirty locations around Southern and East Africa, including Etosha in Namibia, the Serengeti in Tanzania, Maasai Maru and Tsavo West in Kenya, Hwange in Zimbabwe, the Boteti River in Botswana and Timbavati and the Kruger National Park in South Africa. One fascinating webcam provides unique insights into the daily lives of Black Eagles. Another shares the story of critically endangered charges such as cheetahs and rhinos who find a safe haven at the Hoedspruit. The Facebook Group shares regular highlights in the form of photos and video clips.

Barn Cat Network (Saving Community Cats One Barn At A Time)

Some people call them community cats. Whatever the name, they are survivors. Rugged individuals whose existence falls somewhere between the resilience of their wild hunter-ancestors and the pampered, adaptable lifestyle of their domesticated kin. But without the advocacy of a designated carer, life can be harsh. Caught between nature's relentless breeding cycles, and the fierce attention of larger predators, one compassionate human can be all that stands between these at-risk felines and death. Add to that the inconvenient reality of unsympathetic landlords, for example and you have the makings of a feline-shaped emergency. While a patient foster can sometimes work wonders to prepare some of these community cats for a forever home, many community cats are just not cut out for such a radical lifestyle change. At traditional shelters, they face the risk of euthanasia. The Barn Cat Network is all about exploring alternative opportunities. Barn cats act as nocturnal security guards to keep pests and rodents at bay, while enjoying the support of human interaction from a safe and non-demanding distance. Filled with tips and opportunities, the group functions to reach out as a safety net, to transition cats at risk into the safe space of barns, especially when previous human sponsors become overwhelmed, or can no longer fulfill their vital role, due to unforeseen circumstances.

DIY Crafty Fun & Crafters on the Todooo app!

Actually, what this group excels at, is wholesome, hart-warming craft stories. The senior feline who still takes his duties as quality inspector and emotional support animal very seriously. A teen entrepreneur struggle against bullies while she works magic with her crochet needle. Stories about the husbands who are heroes (and the ones who aren't). Craft projects that work quietly in the background to preserve family memories for future generations. Meet the dog who has his own honor wall. The people who discovered the fire of creativity late in life but wouldn't let go of it again. Who repurpose found objects into accessories. Patients who craft rehabilitation and recovery into their creations. How a doctor uses art to inject warmth into his treatments. How someone rediscovered a lost family treasure in a thrift store. If this group is anything to go by, then Todooo is definitely doing something right with the commerce platform and global community they created for creators and craft fans.

YESTERSONGS

Music and me? We go back a very long time, from an early taste for seventies rock to a quest for classics and rarities, and for me, this prog-loving music space hits just the right sort of sweet spot, featuring songs that don't necessarily get to live forever in endless top 40 rotation, but end up becoming timeless anyway. There was, for example, an intoxicatingly psychedelic medley from Eloy and a truly vintage Pink Floyd clip. Some sixties Rolling Stones. A cover version of I got you, Babe featuring David Bowie and Marianne Faithful. A live video of Paul McCartney and Neil Young jamming together. The truly splendid pretentions of old Genesis (Dancing with the Moonlit Knight) and a 1977 concert clip of the Eagles performing Rocky Mountain Way with Joe Walsh's delicious trademark weirdness taking center stage. The zany energy of Dutch band Focus. Homage to Blues rock, courtesy of John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Even a post paying tribute to Cape Town crooner Zayn Adam. I must confess to spending way too much time enjoying all the music, and if you share my taste, you will too.

Handmade Scotland

It's been quite a busy morning on Handmade Scotland and Halloween is definitely in the air already, judging by some of the posted items on offer. This group showcases a rich variety of hand-crafted items, ranging from brightly hand-painted cabinets to a paper mâché Punk Rocker. There are also knitted scarfs and beanies, felt-crafted critters and creatures, a real menagerie of hand-crocheted animals, as well as (in a separate post) a crocheted Franken-cow. Witch's hat earrings. Burnt art functional items. Glass art. Wood carving. An adorable little sailboat crafted entirely from repurposed/upcycled materials Some wonderfully rustic-looking pottery. And best yet, a custom-made, decorated Celtic axe If you're looking for a particular item, for example a traditional tartan shawl, you can consult the hivemind for recommended crafters.

The Phantom Planters

I've heard of guerilla gardening - the practice of secretly caring for plants, bushes and trees on land not belonging to you, and often for the greater good of the community. Sometimes it's about reclaiming neglected, overgrown spaces. Often it invites debate on the nature of land ownership, or requires secretive, nocturnal activity. But the network of Phantom Planters connecting through this group are often about even higher rewards. They take gently and give with love. They are passionately involved in the preservation of arboreal heritage. One example of a next-level conservation effort involves using this autumn season to harvest acorns from several very specific and famous oak trees found in various locations across the UK. Trees that are hundreds of years old and have stood as witnesses and sentinels to history and the myth that came before. The stories shared tell of trees transplanted in this way and how their produce helps the community. What a beautifully wholesome digital space.

Food is one of the few things no-one can opt out of. We all need to eat - but navigating your way around food preferences, the moods of picky toddlers or middle-of-the-month budget bottlenecks can be tricky. Find the perfect side dish to complement soft-boiled eggs or inspiration to utilize leftover ingredients. Share family favorites or spooky breakfast ideas for the Halloween season. Show off takeaway wins. Brainstorm easy fast meals to fit into busy schedules or ask cheap options for group meals. Source the group mind for chocolate dessert or cookie recipes. Looking is sometimes enough to leave you feeling hungry for more.

House Pet Pigeon Club

For at least 5,000 years, pigeons have been domesticated by various human civilizations. As with cats and dogs, humanity influenced their development as a species. Over that time period they were used for food, as companions and to power a surprisingly sophisticated messenger system. In both World Wars, carrier pigeons carried vital intel between battlefields, and some of them are honored for their service, such as G.I. Joe, Paddy, Winkie and Mary of Exeter. As recently as 2009, a South African pigeon named Winston proved that he was still faster at delivering 4GB that an internet service provider. But the House Pet Pigeon Club concerns itself with the lives, wellbeing and day-to-day needs with pigeons and their humans. When I visited, one post shared the adorable reel of a 3-month-old white pigeon watching distant feathered cousins on television. Come here to share your newborn nestlings, get tips on feed and socialization or just to join the conversation.

The Adventures of Patrick The Pony

He's virtually housebroke and handsome. He livestreams on Facebook. He wears rubber shoes and a regally red mayor's robe. And he has a taste for Guinness. As the honorary mayor of Cockington in Devon, Patrick the Pony has acquired quite a following and keeps owners Hanna and Kirk Petrakis on their toes with his busy schedule of public appearances, fundraising efforts and therapy sessions. When his favorite pub, the Drum Inn, decided to ban the equine goodwill ambassador from his interaction pen, it made news headlines. And it's hardly surprising. The adorable Shetland pony has an engaging smile, tons of patience and a heart of gold. if you want to join his crew of admirers, get updates on upcoming events, or just get to see the latest snapshot or video reel in your social media news feed, Patrick's very own Facebook Group or the associated fan page is just the place to be.

Spiritual Singles and Spiritual Partners

I haven't featured this type of group before, but despite my own lack of interest playing the romance game, I found myself fascinated by the tone of this group. It's a space for meeting friends or life partners. Collaborators in a journey of self-discovery. Perhaps for finding someone to share your own flavor of woo with. (Don't get me wrong - I have absolutely nothing against woo!) That makes it somewhat different than your average space for meeting new friends or partners. Some posters share openly about past wounds and present challenges. There are short posts, just to say hi. There are much longer narratives that speak of paths and goals. Deep thinkers and light seekers. Posts that speculate with piercing honestly about motives. There is a ton of engagement, and most comments tend to be positive, honest and supportive.

Trigger Warnings: Should I mention that the romance-seeking component of this group seems mainly about seeking heterosexually oriented connections? Or perhaps that is just my superficial perception...

World Watercolor Group

At first glance, watercolor painting may seem deceptively simple. It's portable enough to have been a valuable tool to the botanists and biologists of past centuries. With a few washes of color, you can cover your paper with impressions suggestive of any number of subjects. Those are the basics. But with a more expert hand guiding the brush, those blotches are infused with a wealth of detail, containing - as the saying goes - multitudes. There are floral studies that pulse with life. Portraits that capture the very essence of a subject. River views where ripples of water interplay with reflections of light. Street scenes that show the sharp, precise line of architectural structures or the messy chaos of humanity going about its daily activities. Paintings that demonstrate clearly just how versatile a medium this can be. The group is associated with the awesome Doodlewash blog created by watercolor enthusiast Charlie O'Shields, which features monthly challenges and showcases watercolor artists from around the world.

World Cityscapes & Skyscrapers

There was a time in the Middle Ages when religious communities actively competed with each other to build the largest, most prestigious cathedral. In those days, it was hubris to even consider building any structure higher than the local church tower. Today it's easy to compare skyscrapers. At night, the great cities of the world paint their skylines in glittering lights. By day, citizens whizz by on highways that are often themselves stunning feats of engineering. Coastal cities cast their reflections in the nearby waters for all to admire. In Chicago, the highest buildings vanish in cloud cover. New York, no longer the world's greatest, still has an immense presence that demands admiration. Across the pond, bustling London seems both timeless and eternal. Guangzhou, China vibrates with eternal motion. Kolkata, India seems immense in dimension and scope. These are just a few of the World Cityscapes featured in this group that is unashamedly urban. Share the skyscrapers that awe you and the cities that hold your heart.

The Trail of Painted Ponies Collectors Group

If you can't afford to own living horses and ponies, then figurines have to be the next best consolation. They don't need feed or visits from the farrier and most of them can be accommodated in the average display cabinet. For those unfamiliar with the company, The Trail of Painted Ponies was founded by author Rod Barker and had already released a startling range of over 400 collectible ponies, many of them designed by everyday artists guided only by their creative muse and their love for horses. There are even special celebrity designs from Dolly Parton, Ali MacGraw, Barbara Eden and Tony Curtis, and other partner initiatives to benefit. (If you live in the USA and you have an idea for an artist's horse, check out the company website for more details.) The Facebook Group is for collectors showing off their equine treasures, looking for display ideas or posting pony figurines for sale. It offers members and visitors the opportunity to acquire or admire retired models, such as the Blue Medicine pony, Tropical Reef pony, Lightning Bolt Colt or the Poinsettia Pony. The ponies are all so beautifully made - they are a joy to behold.

House and Pet Sitting (Worldwide) - "Pawhaps you wanna join?"

Few things add more emotional/soul value to a home than the presence of a pet. Whether it's a cat, dog, bird or an assortment of farm animals, pets spell unconditional love, soft pets and... travel opportunities? Apparently one way of saving on travel accommodation is to offer your house/pet sitting services to someone in another city or country. A win-win situation where the sitter gets a free roof and the pet owner gets peace of mind. What was really touching, though, was several posters mentioning being past pet owners and missing the opportunity to bond with an animal. The group follows fairly strict guidelines regarding how you may post and seems to be well-moderated, despite also being super active. While it's difficult for me to imagine even spending a single night away from my two feline boys, I can well imagine that this platform must solve problems and create opportunities for animal lovers around the world. Remember to do your own due diligence regarding any responses you may receive.

High-Protein & Low Carb Meal Ideas

Browsing through just a few threads in this wonderful Facebook group convinced me that we don't need AI for ideation. We already have something much better. Each other. And crowd-sourced suggestions can be so much richer than regurgitations from content farms. Here's how it seems to work. Ask a food-related question. What's goes good inside a grilled cheese sandwich? A sugar-free late-night snack. Which foods and beverages lower blood pressure? A high-protein alternative to eggs for breakfast? Your thoughts on a breakfast croissant? It's really great to see how much engagement posts like these draws, with some of the suggestions being really original and useful, featuring added condiments and surprise choices. You can also share your meals or recipes for public consumption. This is a food space for everyday people who love what they eat.

The Pastel Palette

I have a love for pastels, when it comes to creating art. The easy blending of color, and soft strokes allows for a very natural brand of realism. But the eye of the artist can still grab your attention with surprising perspectives and expertly rendered details. Examples? The hairy face of a chimpanzee. The interplay of sun and shadow as reflected on a toddler's face by the sunhat she's wearing, or in a riverbed. A bird's eye view on a small plane flying over a coastal cove. A dew-fresh pod of freshly harvested peas. The sun setting on a country park. An exquisite little bird perched precariously on a tree trunk. Dreamy, likelike portraits. A cowboy and his horses, having a moment. I'm really stunned by the skill and expertise displayed within the work shared by members.

Good Housekeeping Book Room

While the heart of a home is no doubt its kitchen, its soul has to be the room with the most books in it, albeit living room, bedroom, private library, reading room or even (dare we suggest) a bathroom. This is where you can nourish your inner self with a delectable menu of adventure, wild romances, everyday exploration, or even a few moments of nail-biting tension - sustenance that by-passes the palate and allows you to breathe in a different place that nevertheless feels like home. Conversation is lively in the Good Housekeeping Book Room, with reading pleasure at its heart. It is a place where you can share without judgement, the experience of having your heart broken by a book, the sense of bereavement you feel upon reaching the last page, and the joy of discovering someone else who shared your wonder of that special place. There are also booklists and announcements from authors, as well as reading lists and suggestions. A good space for readers to visit.

Manhole Covers Around the World

Most are functional, bare visible unless something goes wrong. Others act as decorative timestamps. Some are time capsules. Homage to history or popular culture. In Japan, Pokemon peeks out of the circle. In Ridgefield, Connecticut, a simple leaf design spreads across a rectangular cover. In Orihuela, Spain, a weirdly geometric pattern may recall distant Mudejar inspirations. In Montevideo, Uruguay, a sun god beams up at you. Minneapolis did one better and commissioned artist Kate K. Burke in 1992 to create a series of 11 decorative manhole covers - the three showcased here are absolutely gorgeous. In Istanbul, we see tile art incorporated. The one representing Maribor, Slovenia practically belongs on a postage stamp - it's so quaint and picturesque. Dunjiangyan, China has a selection of cute panda bears. Tromso, Norway pays tribute to reindeer. Get in on the game. See the towns and cities of the world through their manhole covers. Show your own random discoveries, while travelling or in your home town. It's surprisingly fascinating.

Back To The Beginning - Black Sabbath's Final Concert

Heavy metal was born out of the industrial working-class neighborhoods of cities like Birmingham and few bands define its gritty identity better than Black Sabbath. Ozzy Osbourne grew up in abject poverty. Tony Iommi had to adapt his playing style to accommodate an industrial accident. Geezer Butler is an avid supporter of local football club Ashton Villa. Together they crafted dark hard-hitting soundscapes that birthed a new musical genre and numerous related sub-genres. Beyond the changes and controversy, their longevity as a band and in solo careers has to be admired. It is no mean feat to weather more than five decades as torchbearers for generations of metal heads. Almost a week ago, they said goodbye in a heart-felt and emotionally resonant final performance - Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne: Back to the Beginning, featuring guest performances from bands such as Anthrax, Mastadon, Pantera and Metallica. The Facebook Group shares the infectious excitement of audience members representing many different countries, but united in their love for this band and their unique legacy. There are memes, memories, and memorabilia (such as Lego edition Ozzy Osbourne). Snapshots and discussion. A mention of the millions raised for charity.

(Edit: Adding my heartfelt condolences to all who knew and loved Ozzy Osbourne. The news of his passing adds a new dimension of poignancy to the band's last performance. - 23 July 2025)

WEIRD MEME

There are two main reasons why I am often likely to feature one of the larger supergroups on my blog. One is moderation. I suppose a group with over a million users is always that much more tempting for scammers and spammers, making it harder to winnow out the chaff from the substance. The second reason is bland content. But on my recent visit, WEIRD MEME passed with flying colors on both counts. Virtually no AI spotted. And post upon post that makes you think deeply about your place in the universe. I had to grin at a cartoon about different outcomes for princesses who kiss frogs and a meme about insect naughty times. There were also Rackham-esque drawings featuring wild, wild potatoes, exhibits of cat-sized metal armor, memes about implied server room sentience and best yet, a suggestion for a next level mobile lockscreen. But the gut punch moment came in a sad/real conversation between a father and his young son. Hats off to the moderators for keeping this space awesome. I know it must take lots of hard work and dedication.

BLM Mustang Hub

The mustang is an iconic image of the Wild West. The mere image of a herd of wild mustangs galloping across the arid areas of Nevada evokes a powerful image of freedom. Descended from previously domesticated horses, these are the around 50,000 feral horses live on a series of Western and Mid-Western herd areas managed by the Bureau of Land Management. To prevent over-grazing, groups of these horses are periodically captured in round-ups and offered for adoption. While they make resilient, honest horse, these mustangs need patience and specialized training to adapt to an environment radically different from their former lives. For anyone willing to invest time and effort into taming one of these unique equine beauties, the BLM Mustang Hub offers a platform to share their stories, challenges and little victories. Admire their unique coat colors and learn how they came to connect with their owners. Ask others for tips and advice on how to get started. Thanks in no small part to JRR Tolkien and George RR Martin, medieval Europe is central to what most people understand under fantasy. And medieval warfare means knights in armor and swords. Welcome to the world of Historical European Martial Arts, where you will learn not only the difference between a rapier and a zweihander, but also how to wield each of these. The ultimate challenge is of course to test your mettle against that of other enthusiasts. For anyone who wishes to join the community, but doesn't have a clue where to start, this Facebook Group is a valuable entry-level resource. Stonehenge Celebrations

21 June marks the Summer Solstice as well as the longest day of the year - if you're in the Northern Hemisphere, that is. In the British Isles, Stonehenge becomes the site of an annual celebration. Thousands hold their breath as the sun ascends directly behind the Heel Stone, bathing the ancient stone circle in golden light. It is part of what makes this iconic site so very fascinating. The spirit is infectious, as can be seen in the photographs just uploaded from this year's event. There was a live feed at sunrise and earlier posts shared useful information for those planning to attend. Be sure to bookmark this group for next year's solstice.

Camino de Santiago 2025-26

The Camino de Santiago or Way of St James follows the route of a traditional pilgrimage more than a thousand years old. The end destination is always the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, believed to be the last resting place of St James. There are different starting points and to authenticate the experience, you can buy your own credencial or pilgrim's passports, to be stamped at various points along the route. In the most recent season (2024), close to half a million pilgrims completed the route. Numerous books reference the pilgrimage and there's even a 2010 movie starring Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez. Participation is for many a deeply emotional experience. It is meditative, meaningful, and for some life changing. Share your steps and your impressions in videoclips, photographs or even just a few words.

The Lewis and Harris Trail

As the largest island in the Outer Hebrides, Lewis and Harris presents something of a geographic enigma. Are they the same island? Why do they need to have two names if they are connected by a narrow isthmus? I have no answers to those questions, but from visiting The Lewis and Harris Trail Facebook Group, it is easy to see why they are so popular with tourists to this part of Scotland. There is some stunning nature photography, beach rides and pony trekking, local craft events and accommodation options. See some gorgeous knitting and functional art featuring funky impressions of the iconic highland cattle. Drone footage of the dramatic coastline. Tevis Cup Virtual Ride

The Tevis Cup, a 100-mile endurance event for equestrians covering a trail from Robie Park, near Lake Tahoe to the historic town of Auburn in California, dates back to the inaugural ride in 1955. The challenge is to complete this route within 24 hours. Upon completion, horses are evaluated by an on-site vet and there is a separate award given to the horse that finishes in the best physical condition. Typically, around 10,000 horses set out at dawn, of which only about half are expected to cross the finish line within the allotted time. But if you're nowhere near California, or if your horse is not quite the badass, long-distance super athlete usually seen at the main event, there is another way to experience this epic adventure. In 2020, when Covid pre-cancelled most sport and entertainment events, the Tevis Cup organizers introduced the Tevis Cup Virtual Ride, which made the event more accessible to riders from other locales. For the Virtual ride, you may complete the distance in multiple smaller sprints over a 100-day period, logging your progress and sharing your experience. The Facebook Group gives riders an opportunity to share photos and footage from their journey and to express pride in the performance of their horses. What makes this so awesome, is that it gives ordinary hackers the experience of being part of something epic.

All Bugs Go to Kevin

I don't know who Kevin is. But with an estimated 30 million species and 10 quintillion (that's a lot of zeros) individuals at large, it is hardly surprising that his Facebook group for identifying insects, bugs, worms, arachnids and other creepy crawlies would be a very busy online space. Within just 24 hours' worth of posts, I endured some facetime with an RV-domiciled huntsman spider (named Charlotte), a pair of crane flies getting all romantic on someone's windshield, caterpillars sampling the new growth of spring, jumping spiders from several different corners of the globe, a rat-tailed maggot enjoying a swim in a garden bucket, a wolf spider in the wild, and a mantis charmer. And that's not even counting a rogues' gallery of critters that as yet remain unidentified. Scroll through the guides to check the frequently asked questions and comments about specific species, or even just to meet the knowledgeable resident experts through a series of Q&As. There's even a set of All Bugs Go to Kevin merchandize.

FRIENDS AND FICTION

If books give you a reason to breathe. If stories are your pleasure and your poison. If your to-be-read pile is in danger of collapse, but you want more. If you've just visited the most awesome fictional place and dined and danced with its people, and now, you're looking for someone else who's been there too. If you need a road map or maybe just some directions to your next reading adventure. Then FRIENDS AND FICTION is the virtual lounge where you will receive the warmest welcome and more treasures than you can count, because its people are your people. Friendly. Positive. Cozy. And book-centric. The fact that so many books are referenced without authors' names, and the right people still get it, speaks of the easy familiarity that exists between members.

Let's make rag dolls!

Some are stylish, with a hint of sultry energy gleaming between the tiny stitches. Others are humbler, with yarn for hair and button eyes. There's a collection of outrageous witches regarding you with wise, yet tired eyes. At least one has outfits and accessories to spare. Another draws inspiration for her bright traditional dress from Yamaya, Orisha Goddess of the Sea. But she is not the only ambassador for cultural fashion. A personalized gift pokes fun at the trials and tribulations of the aging female body. Here and there, a cloth cat or dog. Or a blast from the past - a rag doll from long ago that represents love and distant memories. There are Viking maidens, baby dolls and even a plush and pink elephant lady. It is amazing to see how much individualization is possible with rag dolls. Many probably reflect the unique characters of their makers.

Roma Urbs Aeterna

For the past few weeks, the eyes of the world had been fixed on events in the Eternal City of Rome, with the burial of one pontiff and the election of his successor. In world history, the buildings, monuments and art of Rome provides a continuous thread that connects our world with ancient triumphs and tragedies. For good or ill, it forms a sturdy framework to fixtures of our modern world, even to those of us who reside far from it. Whether it's the timeless views of old bridges that bisect the Tiber, the inscribed stonework of recovered ruins or terracotta statuary now residing in museums, Rome has so many faces, so many impressions to show us. Infographics decode the mysteries of a Pompeii bathhouse or Hadrian's wall. Scenes from everyday life, depicted in painted images or inlaid mosiac humanize the people of ancient Rome. We see it reflected in opulent image from Renaissance or 18th century art. There are the backstories behind significant archaeological discoveries. Even a little factoid revealing what Gaius Julius Caesar thought of beer.

Tips & Tricks For Monstera Happiness

Did you know that a Monstera plant is supposed to be a harbinger of monetary wellness? That while residing in your home, it is supposed to be quietly, yet efficiently purifying the air you breathe?  Or that the plant was first discovered by Louis XIV's Royal Botanist? Whether you subscribe to the above-mentioned superstitions, or whether you just like to enjoy its green, leafy tranquility in your proximity, if you own a monstera, chances are you will want it to thrive. For gardening enthusiasts, this Facebook Group is a valuable resource for connecting to like-minded monster-heads, or to ask the hive mind for advice, if your delicious monster needs a boost or some tender loving care.

Mixed Media & Mixed Medium Art

A fusion of styles and inspirations. A bright and unexpected explosion of color. Found objects meeting paint and canvas. A few staves of sheet music peeking out from behind the colored folds of an imagined lady. New life growing in the heart of vintage elements. Black and white photographs. Re-purposed buttons. Art becomes so much more dynamic when it moves out of the confines of its framing. A unique energy dances across the pages when multiples blend into one. As I scroll through the creations of group members at Mixed Media & Mixed Medium Art, delight sits frequently on my shoulders, tugging at the corners of my mouth. It is easy to smile, in the presence of so much creativity. So much beauty. Visit often and stay inspired.

SWFL Eagles - The ORIGINAL LEGACY OF HARRIET, M15 & HIS NEW FAMILY

For those who consider the title of this post (and the name of the Facebook Group) to be incomprehensible gibberish, allow me to introduce you to the superstars of the Southwest Florida eagle cam. First there were Ozzie and Harriet, the original pair of mated bald eagles, observed all the way back in 2006. In 2013, a hidden camera was first installed in their tree-located nest, just in time to observe a brood of 8-week-old eaglets. To have called them little, even at that stage, might have been an understatement. They were already over a foot high, with almost adult-sized beaks, at reported in the very first nest notes. After Ozzie vanished, Harriet welcomed a new "husband" to her home, M15, and by now, Harriet too is gone, and the feathered-Mrs-in-residence is now dubbed F23. Earlier this year, this dignified pair suffered the loss of their youngest to avian flu, but they remain resilient. One of the most fascinating episodes of this long-term project has been when M15 did his stint as solo eagle dad, after Harriet's disappearance, raising two young eaglets on his own, before choosing a new companion. For regular updates or even livestreams on the private lives of these magnificent birds, you can visit their website or check out the Facebook Group for highlights. There will also be news and footage from other raptor families in different locations.

DIY Ponds & Water Gardens

There is something tranquilizing about the sound of running water. There is also something soothing about the presence of a water body outside your window. If you're super rich, you can opt for a seaside villa, a lake cabin or even an island of your own. But if your budget's a little more modest than that, there is a deeply satisfying alternative you can craft in your own time. Welcome to the cozy magic of do-it-yourself fishponds and water features. Secret sanctuaries for pet turtles. Magical nocturnal lighting. Quaint bridges. Gnomes, faeries and toadstools. If you're looking for advice on wholesome pond maintenance or even tips on fish whispering (no, seriously - there are ways to make the fish come to you), this is your village of sage advisors.

Cemetery Arts

Tiddles's tombstone was what drew me in to take yet another look at this Facebook Group. Tiddles was a church cat, remembered in a lovely gravestone and monument. But Tiddles is not the only cat immortalized in this manner. Further down, "the beautiful cat endures". The macabre funerary art of a Czech ossuary. An automobile engineer's grave communicates his passion for wheels - in life and in death. The loveliness of early springtime in Savannah's Bonaventure. The famous Highgate cemetery in London. Angels, angels and more angels. Stone puppies frozen in a moment of play. A Hello-Kitty memorial for the tragic young victim of a murder. The popular mausoleum of a Persian poet. A remembrance for unknown soldiers observed in Copenhagen. An Argentine memorial garden pays tribute to musical stars such as bandleader Anibal Troilo and singer Carlos Gardel. There are flowers everywhere and even after all this time, admirers make sure that the cigarette between Gardel's fingers stays lit. A ray of sun lights the tombs of tranquil Yanaka cemetery in Tokyo. Guatemala's land of the joyful dead. There is so much beauty here.

Reg Smythe - The Cartooning Genius behind Andy Capp

If ever there was a paragon of disgrace and infamy, you need look no further than Reg Smythe's pint-sized, permanently pickled lay-about, Andy Capp. I should know. However inappropriate for juvenile consumption they may seem today, we grew up with a stack of the Andy Capp comics, usually hauled out on Sundays or rainy days. Andy Capp drank until he was horizontal, abused snatching privileges on his wife's handbag to finance his vices and avoided work and the rent collector like the plague. On top of that, he was toxically misogynistic and all too frequently, his endless battles with long-suffering spouse Florrie turned physical. About the only nice thing one could say about the diminutive Northerner was that he liked pigeons. Andy and his regular supporting cast of victims and enablers are shrewdly observed and drawn, providing brutally honest social commentary. To quote Charlie Chaplin (yet another flawed human being, by modern standards), "Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot".

Old Post boxes uk

Some overlook a moody coastline. Others languish among other discarded relics in scrapheaps. Or take up the mantle of inanimate ambassador to the Best of British across the pond and further beyond. Occasionally they attract yarn bombers or other fiber art enthusiasts, inspire visual tributes or attract graffiti. But many still stand sentinel, guarding the unfettered flow of the Royal Mail system. There's a post box in Cardiff that's more than a hundred years old and not showing that much wear and tear of its many decades of service. Poldark Tin Mine in Cornwall boasts the deepest post box. And, just to show that postboxes are moving with the times, there are newer editions that bear the monogram of King Charles III. Even Edward VIII, famous for his short and scandalous reign, left his mark on post box culture. If you mentioned postbox red, everyone would know what you're talking about. But in Ireland, they're green. In Guernsey, you might stumble across a blue one. In Cyprus, they are as yellow as the sun. And - this is no legend - there is a gold-painted one in St Stephens, Cornwall. If you're keenly interested in the world of the post box, there are books and groups dedicated to their charm, as well as museums in London, Colne Valley, Halstead and the Isle of Wight

Photo Restoration Group

I love history. I also love looking at pictures. Not just paintings. Photographs too. I love the way they capture random moments. Special times. And love lost. Somewhere in a box beneath my mother's bed there's a sepia tinged photograph of my grandfather as a baby. That photograph is more than a hundred years old, and - thank goodness - it remains in fairly good shape, for its age. Scrolling through the posts here made me think my own keepsakes - and those of family members. Each photo shared here is irreplaceable. Some are weathered, creased, faded or sun stained. Some are just blurry - poor representations of the memories they hold. Some are spoiled by accidental photo-bombs. Whatever may be that niggling reason for a snapshot being less than perfect, the wonderfully generous members of this Facebook group lovingly apply their skill and their magic to retouch and repair all those special photos that tell stories of a thousand words or more. Some of the resulting images are nothing short of amazing. If nothing else, this space is also a welcome antidote to the soulless manifestations of AI generation apps.

IT Humor and Memes (UNCENSORED)

Calling all geeks and nerds and tech wannabees. Here's your water-cooler. A not-quite-safe space to snigger at those ubiquitous Windows Updates, the short-sightedness of corporate culture, the humorous side of connectivity woes and even some hilariously insane idiot hacks (that have zero chance of working). Share your nostalgia for classic operating systems such as Windows XP or donate your two cents on those endless Windows vs Linux debates. Your frustrations relating to chargers, cables, search engines and the inevitable left-over screws. Dream about the gaming gadgets of the future, speculate on how automatic passwords are generated or pontificate on the benefits of double monitors.

Red Dead Redemption Photography

When you look at the gorgeous scenery, a fascinating cast of non-player characters, real-world climate and ecosystem and immersive sound design, it's easy to see why Red Dead Redemption and its pre-quel Red Dead Redemption 2 has such a loyal following. With a development path that took five years to bring the game to fruition, Red Dead Redemption became one of the most expensive games of its time but sold around 15 million units worldwide. The game's genre is the closing days of the Wild West, but there are interesting side features such as a hunt for Bigfoot or even a flirtation with zombies. On the Red Dead Redemption Photography Facebook group, you can share aspects of your gameplay and individual character experiences with like-minded enthusiasts. You can share the places you explore, your hunting triumphs and character portraits. Show snapshots of beautiful sunsets or moonlight rides. Showing off horses is also popular. There's even a tip on a feature that allows you to keep your old horse as a secondary horse when you upgrade mounts and a music video.

Matrix Mysteries

I have a confession to make. Glitches in the Matrix fascinate me. And I'm not talking about whether Nelson Mandela died in the 1980s or in 2013, or whether a certain brand has changed their logo or not. What really interests me, are the personal stories, because they hint at hidden truths beyond the confines of our own universe. These are the posts that proliferate in Matrix Mysteries. Homes that seem to shift in and out of reality. Weirdly person-specific micro-climates. Ambient sounds that inexplicably go quiet. Personal objects that don't behave the way they should. Private thoughts and observations that bleed through into the physical world. Ghost pets and ghostly co-residents. Even near-death or real-death experiences that result in a reset of reality or the formation of eerie portals in the wilderness. But there are also posts that challenge your perceptions or wake you up to previously unimagined possibilities. Here you will find a truly mind-blowing collection of crowd-sourced enigmas.

Scotland's Turntable

In a bygone era, musical discoverability was an easy thing - if you had money to burn and the ear of an influential program director or two. Some bands and artists ran up the charts with almost supernatural dexterity and a seemingly permanent exemption from the laws of gravity. Others played their hearts out and it was never enough. Today, new platforms have made it both easier and harder to get noticed. Algorithms analyze your choices on platforms like Spotify and YouTube to craft new suggestions. But sometimes good old word of mouth survives in hallowed spaces such as this Facebook group which combines nostalgic vinyl imagery with song suggestions. It's an elegant fusion of past obsessions conquering new horizons. Music varies from the eclectic, mystical pop of Kate Bush, the gritty realism of Tom Waits, hard rocking Led Zeppelin, Blue Oyster Cult and Scorpions, Marillion to the electronic work of Kraftwerk, Gary Numan and Ultravox. As expected, there's a fair amount of eighties Britpop classics and rarities, but there are also new vinyl re-issues and limited editions featured. I loved seeing records in non-standard colors or even picture disks. In a few cases, even the label art was beautiful. And occasionally something truly obscure gets to be aired again.

Dance Accepts Everyone

Founder Adam Boreland created the dance-positive Facebook Group Dance Accepts Everyone in response to a news anchor's comment about Prince George's ballet lessons. According to an online biography, Adam is a highly trained professional dancer who has taken on principal roles in productions of Swan Lake, Cinderella, The Nutcracker, Moulin Rouge and Peter Pan. From the perspective of someone with zero training in dance like myself, Adam's beautiful dexterity and grace seems almost super-human and impossible to achieve, but his infectious joy opens the door for anyone to join in. There is a somewhat humorous clip of a high kick gone wrong and the triumph of a smiling, tap-dancing granny of almost 102. A sinuously emotive sidewalk performance. A vintage Audrey Hepburn clip. Catch Adam himself live for his inspiring Monday Motivation sessions. Other posts highlight the way dancing informs other aspects of lives. Its ability to heal and rejuvenate. The way dance celebrates the union of music and movement.

Windmills

In the arid Karoo of South Africa, windmills are lifelines, to supply scarce water to man and beast. They also serve as lone landmark in a landscape that seems almost featureless. One could almost say that they emphasize the atmosphere of desolation. But they can also be found in Namibia, Texas, Kansas, Michigan, Iowa, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya. In the American Great Plains, windmills transformed the terrain from desert to breadbasket of the nation. Penong in Southern Australia features 20 restored windmills as a roadside attraction. Dutch windmills are a completely different kettle of salted herring, partly because they fulfill a different function. Shorter and stockier, the iconic windmills of the Netherlands serve to take charge of an over-abundance of water, in a country that is partially below sea level. From the Middle Ages, mills stood at the heart of a community's economic activity, used in the production of flour, mustard, snuff, cocoa, oil, chalk and even paint. They can even be used for communication - the position of the sails can be used to share important messages such as deaths, weddings or even warnings during time of warfare. If you know of a windmill you'd like to share with the world, this Facebook group is the platform to show it.

Death Stairs

They can be found lurking below trap doors or behind secret corners, at the apex of precarious yet scenic trails, in tourist hot spots, on Airbnb, navigating public transport or even forming a nail-bitingly dramatic backdrop to fictional thrills on the big screen. Like it or not, death stairs are everywhere. While Amsterdam seems to be the world capital of death stairs, and China takes particular delight in terrifying innocent travelers with jaw-dropping engineering feats such as the Staircase to the Sky, British double-decker buses can compete with the best of vertical challenges. Whether you are looking at asymmetric mal-alignments, industrial spaces from hell, obsessions with efficient design that toss user safety to the wayside, rail-free circular steps or even wheelchair access ramps that are strangely inaccessible to the disabled, the users of this Facebook Group track down offenders to shame them. Even the Great Pyramid of Giza, with its claustrophobically narrow interior and the fabulous dwarven kingdoms of Tolkien are not spared.

Weird (and wonderful) secondhand Finds That Just Need to Be Shared

We all love a bargain, or even just the opportunity to peer at an anonymous someone's pre-loved treasures. After all, one man's trash, as the saying goes... Whether it's Goodwill, Facebook Marketplace or just some anonymous car boot sale, if you're stumbled upon something random and truly awesome, snap a pic and share your story to this fascinating Facebook group. Items range from the quirky and the gorgeous to the occasionally gory. There are plenty of ceramics, for some reason, but other finds include hand-crafted dolls, music boxes, salt and pepper shakers, antique lamps, art and an extensive collection of bowling balls, but you will also see vintage telephones, miniature cottages, whimsical paintings, antique silver mugs and even a many-spouted tea pot (or should we say tea pot shaped porcelain folly?). Scrolling through the posts filled me with awe for the most eclectic collection of random wonders.

I Love Cappybara

Despite the fact that they are the size of a large dog, and can weigh as much as an adult human, cappybara are still classed as rodents. And yes, they do exist outside the strange reality of jaw-dropping social media memes. For scale, they are frequently portrayed with pets, such as cats, their rodent-like features at odds with their gigantic size. Even without captions, cappybara are effortlessly instagramable with their distinctly unphased expressions. Although many photos show them interacting with members of their own species, there are also snapshots of cappybara chilling in domestic environments. The I Love Cappybara Facebook Group is linked to Capybara's Planet, a group that promotes Cappybara-themed merchandize.

Sunrises and Sunsets of the World

Whether it be the silvery slithers of new light that signify the start of another day, or the golden, sun-drenched glory that marks the end of it, there is something romantic and special about sunrise and sunset. Both prompt you equally towards self-reflection with their beauty. When travelling, a sunset infuses the watcher with the magic of transitions - be they temporal or geographical. But they also touch of the timelessness of our shared appreciation of beauty. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's wise Little Prince exalted in the sunsets of his tiny home planet and mourned the fact that Earth's sunsets were a whole twenty-four hours apart. He might have loved this group, where you can experience a thousand sunsets around the world, simply by scrolling further. Goodnight, beautiful planet. Here's looking at you.

Wild Green Memes for Ecological Fiends

Kindness. After scroll through the posts here, I became absolutely convinced that this is a Facebook group that runs on kindness. What did it for me? One commmenter explaining the sad backstory of a (non-ecological) meme I must have seen on Facebook a million times before. But the caring here wears the garments of scientific lingo and the badges of species battling extinction. It flaunts insider knowledge on animals most people couldn't even spare a thought for. It crafts clever jokes and challenges members and visitors to think wider, think higher and think deeper. Enlightening us, for instance, on the distinction between critters and varmints. Even the virtual air feels a little more wholesome within this space.

Feather Identification Worldwide

Legend has it that when you encounter an angel, he will leave a perfectly white feather nearby to be taken as a sign of his presence. But that doesn't mean that the multi-patterned feathers posted in this Facebook group for crowd-sourced answers are any less special. Ideally, besides a photograph optimized to illustrate size, a post should also feature details about the region and general habitat type where a photograph was found. Although the group is international, there is an abundance of plumage from Australia, which makes it even more interesting. There are feathers shown from ibises, hawks, pheasants, egrets, ducks, owls, cockatoo, ravens, kestrels, peacocks and even humble pigeons. A great space for birding enthusiasts, if you want to play along and have something to show.

Barbie Vintage, Silkstone and Reproduction Collection

As an icon of the 20th century, Barbie the intrepid trendsetter represents a role model to millions. But her global appeal is no longer limited to brand-conscious adolescents. Whole industries and online platforms have sprung up to support the numerous adult collectors of Barbie dolls. This Facebook group is one such entity - dedicated to showcasing and exploring the many faces of Barbie. Special attention is paid to the newer Silkstone range of fashion dolls, created to accommodate collectors with a skin texture and feel that mimics more durable porcelain. Posts show-case Barbie in dioramas with her plastic friends, ranging from wedding parties to popular media re-enactments and even historical guises. You will see Barbie modeling hand-made prom dresses, rocking a vibrant Italian style, showing off period cocktail dresses, designer edition dresses or even wearing the identity of the equally iconic Audrey Hepburn. One post shows what laundry day in the dollhouse looks like. Another shows Barbie looking stylishly demure in one of Ken's garments. There are even rescue stories of dolls found in distressing circumstances.

The Women of Star Trek (Le Donne di Star Trek) In Love Memory (2025) ...

From Uhura to Michael Burnham. Deanna Troi's composure. The sexy but forbidding Seven of Nine. Captain's Archer's calculating, yet gorgeous Vulcan mentor T'Pol. The formidable Captain Janeway. Brainy B'Elanna - an engineer as combustible as dilithium and anti-matter. The infinite depths of former revolutionary, Major Kira. Not to mention Dr Beverley Crusher, tough-as-nails Tasha Yar, Nurse Capell, Deanna Troi, elfin Kes, Ensign Tilly, Jadzia and Ezri Dax, the relatably cautious Hoshi and so many more. Over almost six decades, the Star Trek has seen a wide spectrum of female characters, all memorable and unique, and here's where you can see them all. There's a vintage snapshot of the legendary Majel Barrett in her very first Star Trek appearance as Captain Pike's Number One. Former beauty queen Persis Khambatta. We also see the Star Trek ladies out of costume or in other non-related productions. What's really great is that this Facebook group does not only pay attention to the familiar ensemble faces that returned week after week to the screen. Notable guest stars are also celebrated for their role in bringing Star Trek to life, such as Suzie Plakson as Worf's lost sweetheart, K'Ehleyr and Rosalyn Landor as the feisty Bringloidi babe, Breena Odell.
