Stupid things pet owners say to vets and vet nurses

We are often unaware of the hardships and humor medical professionals endure on a daily basis in the line of work, and although the members of this group care for our furry friends, rather than us, they still deserve our respect, our gratitude and above all our understanding. As some of the posters point out, it is often not so much the pets that annoy, but the behavior and insensitivity of the owners. Some threads such as 'The thermometer reaction.' and 'Wierd names for neutering' deal with those things pet owners cannot bring themselves to say, while others such as 'Most annoying things to happen in a consultation', 'Know it all's' and 'I Can't Pay You Any Money This Week Because .........' deal with the sort of things vets would love to introduce into conversations, if only their good manners would let them. Other topics include 'Funniest thing that has happened in practice...', 'Worst surgical surprise', 'Christmas disasters' and 'Quirky things that pets do'.

What's great about this group: Learn more about the trials and tribulations of your vet.

A word of caution: You might not want to know some of the grosser, more graphic details of a vet's work.

Update (29 April 2024)
This post has the distinction of being the most commented upon in all of the blog. However, the group it profiles, no longer exists.

  1. Vet's Best Natural Flea & Tick Home Spray 32oz 32 oz

Vets Best Flea + Tick Home Spray is unique blend of Peppermint Oil and Clove Extract that banishes fleas and flea eggs from pet surroundings by killing them on contact. No only can this safe, natural protective formula be applied directly to pets but also on most surfaces around the home. And it leaves an invigorating fresh scent everywhere it lands.

Thank you for deleting me before I could bring this to peoples attention.

Sorry I don't want to use Bayer and Bayer products as they nearly wiped out honey bees by engineering sunflowers and other crops that we EAT with pesticide and herbicide in their genes that excrete them. Or other products that are toxins and have had recalls. Who knows might be one of the reasons for tumors and cancers in so many pets. Lets not forget insecticide, stuff we put on pets and plants, were made as a biological warfare to murder humans as I believe mustard gas in WWII was it?... yup these corporations care about humans, plants and especially our pets... not money at all. Made this myself... Except I was being considerate and only used peppermint, as clove is not safe for cats as their livers cannot metabolize it.. What, I did research? Yes, yes I did. Organic flea repellents that are sold, as well as what our ancestors have used for hundreds of years, use herbs... like rosemary, sage, tea tree, peppermint, clove and many more. Thank you for your time. Also thank you for everyone who sent all those wonderful messages... Open minds are the best minds.

  2. This site is nasty. I asked a question about cancer slowing drugs to help before surgery and was attacked. I am a first year veterinary student and this is what the ADMINISTRATOR said to me.

"The veterinary community DESPISES those seeking medical advice on the internet. If you had a snowball's chance in hell of completing veterinary school you would know this. Time to start exploring alternative careers."

This is a very unprofessional way to handle a website in my opinion. And the veterinary community is supposed to be supportive. They don't know my financial situation or anything about my case, but will send nasty grams and then block people if you explain. Its disgusting. I dont want to share the veterinary field with someone like that. I hope they retire before I graduate.

    2. Hmm. So I 'liked' the comments about the group admins getting a little high and mighty in relation to your post too and GUESS WHAT. I got thrown out too. I'm glad I don't work with people like that. Who on EARTH do they think they are?

  3. I witnessed that attack and as a veterinary professional I am ashamed of how you were treated by my colleagues. There was a lot of debate about how some people handled your post and subsequent contact from your vet and husband and many people were standing up for you. I "liked" a few of the supportive comments and have subsequently been axed from the group. I didn't even comment! I was considering leaving, this attack feeling like the straw that broke the camel's back, but I'm glad the decision was made for me.

I agree that some people on that site have behaved in a rude and unprofessional manner and are hiding behind group guidelines (that it is now clear not everyone supports) to support their behaviour. Guidelines that are maintained by a closed group of dictatorial administrators.

Good luck with your little rat, I hope you get to having the surgery and all is well. Suggestions for slowing growth from other group members included tamoxifen (prob expensive) or galastop (which is carbegoline). All the best.

  4. I posted an opinion about thinking twice before posting pictures of a client's pet's injuries for purposes of ridicule, and got axed. I am not against anon descriptions of the insane things we see as vet techs, but I feel that there is a certain level of professionalism when dealing with medicine. Obviously they did not like my thoughts on the matter, as I was ridiculed and axed. Good riddance!

  5. if its the same group im thinking about i was axed too im pretty sure - no warning - no reason as to why i was axed from this site! makes me ashamed to call myself a vet nurse around those people!!

  6. I was a member of that group until there was a blowup about the behaviour of one of the admins, Wendy "Supercilious Tart" Rose. She did a hostile takeover of the group, and removed the other admins as well as anyone who had made a complaint about her. The group which was once a great place is now the pits.

    1. Same here.. member for a number of years. I made comment about things brewing behind the scene & the fact I noticed a number of regulars seemed to have dropped off over the months. Wondered if they started their own group or joined another & BAM!..removed & blocked. Wasn't particularly liking where the group was going anyway..lot of school yard type bullying going on with the "popular" kids ganging up on the unsuspecting posters who didn't memorise inside out, the guidelines. They enjoyed chewing them up, spitting them out then axing them. Even setting up fake posts to lure the "trolls" out to have fun. Sure the hitler who is running the show is enjoying all control they have in their virtual world. Clearly real life must suck for them. The only thing I'll miss is the interaction with some of the lovely, genuine people out there, sharing the stories& support. Going to try to find another group.

    2. Ditto. Try "Veterinary Medicine... and the people who keep its beat alive". Weird name but a lot of the regulars went there and it has all the same docs. Cant promise it wont go down exactly the same track but there isn't much else out there so it's worth a try.

    3. Cheers.. I'll check it out.

  7. Yep, I was a member of "Stupid Things..." for the past couple years and active in the group. I simply remarked that I didn't feel like "retard" was an appropriate insult and BAM, I'm out!! No warning, no nothing, just OUT. I am really bummed as I really enjoyed the group. It's just so unfortunate that the very thing that keeps a group going (feedback) will get everyone kicked out at some point. No comments seem safe over there. Real bummer.

  8. I am so glad to have found all of you on here! I was banned and deleted from this same group today and was very upset about it. The administrator send me some very rude emails after I had emailed another member defending myself after she attacked me on one of their posts. I had said nothing foul or threatening

  9. Sorry this is continued from above. I was nearly in tears this morning until I read this post. I know that sounds silly but I have never been banned from anywhere before and it really hurt. Especially since I was only defending myself and and always professional.

  10. Looking for an alternative group....where are all the banished members now?

  11. Just got banned from this group, I figure it was because I posted a picture to the wall rather than to a folder (I couldn't work out how to put it in a folder on my phone so I was going to move it as soon as I got onto my computer). I jump on my laptop minutes later and BAM! banned and blocked, no message or warning. What a joke, and here I thought it was a supportive, humorous environment for professionals to let off steam. Turns out its a power trip for a select few.
